Spoilers for the series finale of And Just Like That….
“Party of One,” the season-three finale, is also the series endpoint. Carrie Bradshaw finishes her novel with a thought that sums up the show’s final choice: “The woman realized she was not alone, she was on her own.” It is a clear, potentially moving alternative to another romantic resolution. But the episode’s scattered Thanksgiving stories and grotesque comic detours make that clarity feel less like a hard-won farewell than a sentence the show arrived at before the rest of its characters did.
How does And Just Like That… end?
Carrie spends Thanksgiving delivering pies to friends whose plans have splintered into separate family gatherings. She ends the day at home alone, revising the epilogue to the novel she has worked on through the season and listening to Barry White. Her final line changes the story’s emphasis: its woman is not abandoned or waiting for someone to arrive; she is “on her own.”
The finale also gives the rest of the ensemble varying degrees of resolution. Miranda imagines a future with Joy and a bond with her future grandchild after a chaotic dinner. Charlotte supports Rock and reconnects with Harry as he recovers from prostate cancer treatment. LTW and Herbert recommit, Seema moves toward Adam without requiring marriage, and Anthony and Giuseppe stay together after doubts about their engagement. These endings suggest possibilities more than they settle every question.

Does Carrie’s ending feel earned?
The idea is stronger than the episode’s route to it. The original Sex and the City ended with Carrie finding romantic reunion; this time, the final statement is that a life need not be completed by a partner. Showrunner Michael Patrick King described it as an evolution of that earlier ending: “I always thought, the evolution of that is to realize, ‘I’m OK if maybe no one else is coming.’” (TheWrap, August 14, 2025.)
That intention gives the final line a useful distinction: being alone is not the same as being left behind. Yet the finale makes Carrie’s endpoint much more legible than the emotional steps that lead her there. Delivering pies creates a neat image of her as the group’s connective tissue, and the quiet at home gives her ending room to breathe. It does not, by itself, make the novel’s conclusion feel fully earned by the season’s events. The sentiment lands; the dramatic build to it is thinner.

Why does the finale feel so strange?
Thanksgiving should provide the natural shape of a series goodbye: people gather, take stock, and show what their relationships mean. Instead, the planned group meal at Miranda’s breaks apart, sending characters into separate domestic stories. The episode also gives conspicuous attention to a clogged toilet and bodily comedy. That grotesquerie is recognizably in keeping with the series’ taste for awkwardness, but here it competes with the farewell rather than sharpening it.
That tonal split helps explain why reactions diverged. Variety’s August 15 review saw the episode’s uncanniness as consistent with the show and Carrie’s conclusion as internally coherent, while finding the goodbye somewhat abrupt. TV Guide’s August 14 review judged the ending more like a whimper and found the character work unsatisfying. The difference is not simply whether the finale is odd; it is whether that oddness feels like the show’s identity or an obstacle to emotional closure.

Does the ensemble get a satisfying goodbye?
Not equally. Carrie receives the unmistakable final image and thesis, while other characters get a mixture of decisions, reconciliations, and open-ended possibilities. TIME’s August 15 review argued that Miranda and Charlotte were shortchanged even as Carrie received closure. Variety likewise noted that some stories remain open to future developments.
Those unresolved futures could be a reasonable way to leave a long-running ensemble: people continue living beyond the last scene. But because the show gives Carrie the clearest endpoint, the open endings can also feel like an imbalance rather than deliberate ambiguity. The finale says what Carrie’s story means more decisively than it says where the others stand.

Was “Party of One” planned as the series finale?
Season three was announced as a 12-episode season, premiering May 29, 2025, with its finale scheduled for August 14, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The Associated Press reported that And Just Like That… would end after that season; King said he reached the decision while writing its final episode. The original Sex and the City ran from 1998 to 2004. (Associated Press.)
In an interview, King said he and Sarah Jessica Parker brought the decision to HBO Max leadership and were given two additional episodes to shape the ending. He said the announcement was delayed so the word “final” would not overshadow the season. That is King’s account of the creative and announcement process, not independent confirmation of the discussions. (TheWrap, August 14, 2025.) The extra episodes may have given the ending room, but they did not prevent some reviewers from finding the farewell abrupt.

Verdict: relief without a fully satisfying goodbye
The relief in the title is understandable. The series stops rather than reopening Carrie’s romantic future, and its last line makes a thoughtful case for self-sufficiency. But an explicit theme is not the same as a fully earned emotional ending. “Party of One” gets Carrie to a coherent destination, leaves much of the ensemble’s future to the viewer, and wraps that destination in comic chaos that will either feel unmistakably on-brand or badly timed. It is a defensible final word, not an entirely satisfying final episode.
