The lead was temporary: a later Bloomberg-index snapshot reported on September 16, 2026, ranked Musk first and Bezos third. These are dated estimates, not permanent standings or audited cash balances.
When did Jeff Bezos pass Elon Musk?
Contemporary reports said Bezos moved into first place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index on March 4, 2024. Bloomberg’s account announced that Musk was no longer the world’s richest person for the first time in more than nine months, as reported by RetailWire.
How much were Bezos and Musk worth at the time?
RetailWire reported Bloomberg’s estimates as $200.3 billion for Bezos and $197.7 billion for Musk on March 4, 2024. A March 5 report by The Independent rounded the figures to $200 billion and $198 billion. The reports differ in precision, not in who ranked first.
These figures describe estimated wealth on a particular index snapshot. They are not audited totals or amounts of cash held by either person.

Why did Bezos move ahead?
Contemporaneous coverage connected Musk’s drop in the ranking to weakness in Tesla shares. RetailWire reported that Tesla stock fell 7.2% in the relevant session, amid a decline in vehicle shipments in China. The Independent also noted recent Tesla share weakness and reported that Bezos held about 9% of Amazon, citing a February 2024 Form 4 filing.
Those details provide market context, not a complete calculation of either person’s wealth. The change in rank reflected estimates of large, changing holdings; the reporting does not establish a single factor as the full explanation.

Is Jeff Bezos still the richest person?
No, not in the later snapshot cited here. The Indian Express reproduced Bloomberg Billionaires Index data dated September 16, 2026, listing Elon Musk first at an estimated $892 billion and Jeff Bezos third at $274 billion. Those figures describe that dated snapshot, not a live ranking for October 2026. The Indian Express report says Bloomberg’s index is revalued after each New York market close, so rankings can change as asset values move.

How to read “world’s richest” rankings
- Check the date. A position in a frequently updated index is a snapshot, not a lasting title.
- Check the publisher. The figures above are Bloomberg index estimates as reported by the named outlets.
- Keep precision consistent. The 2024 reports give different rounding; cite one report’s pair of figures together rather than blending them.
- Distinguish wealth estimates from cash. A ranking does not mean the person has that amount readily available as money.
