Artem Chigvintsev was not slated for the professional roster of Dancing with the Stars Season 33 before his August 29, 2024 arrest, according to contemporaneous reports. The timing is established; the reason for the casting decision is not.
Was Artem Chigvintsev returning for Season 33?
No. On August 29, 2024, TVLine reported that a representative for the show confirmed Chigvintsev was not on the upcoming season’s professional roster. TV Insider also reported that he was not expected to participate before the arrest became public.
Those reports establish that his absence from the Season 33 roster preceded the arrest. They do not establish why he was not selected. The available reporting does not support attributing the casting decision to the arrest, a contract issue, budget, or any other specific production reason.
What happened, and when?
- Season 32, 2023: Chigvintsev competed with Charity Lawson and finished fourth. ABC News reported that he had competed on 12 seasons of the show and won Season 29 with Kaitlyn Bristowe.
- August 29, 2024: He was arrested in Napa County, California, on suspicion of felony domestic violence and booked under California Penal Code section 273.5(a). ABC News and CBS News San Francisco reported that he was released after posting $25,000 bail. Initial reports said officials had not identified the alleged victim.
- September 24, 2024: The Napa County District Attorney’s Office announced it would not file criminal charges after reviewing the investigation and evidence.
What does the decision not to file charges mean?
It means prosecutors did not file a criminal charge; it is not a conviction, a trial verdict, or a court finding about what happened. District Attorney Allison Haley said: “While we take every arrest seriously and stand firmly against domestic violence, we have an ethical obligation to only file charges when supported by the evidence.” The office said its decision followed “a thorough review of the criminal investigation and careful evaluation of the evidence presented to the DA’s Office.”
