Liam’s claim that he is Maggie’s husband is literal: Maggie left him behind to pursue her career and never got divorced. The Season 3 finale reveals that marriage just as Maggie and Cal seem ready to begin a new chapter together, but it leaves the history of Maggie and Liam’s relationship largely unexplained.
What happens at the end of Season 3?
Maggie and Cal decide to stay in Timberlake, where Maggie plans to open a general practice and serve the community. Their fresh start appears to be taking shape at the opening of Rob’s restaurant—until Liam arrives.
When Maggie reacts with shock, Liam asks, “Is that any way to greet your husband?” Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer confirms that he means it: Maggie had left Liam to pursue her career and never stopped to get divorced. Her earlier description of him as a summer fling had left out the marriage.
Why does Liam call himself Maggie’s husband?
Because, as the finale explains it, Maggie never divorced him. The reveal is not a joke or a misunderstanding. It turns Liam’s return into an immediate complication for Maggie and Cal, who had just chosen to remain in Timberlake together.

What does the finale leave unanswered?
Season 3 does not explain the full history of Maggie and Liam’s marriage: how they got married, why Maggie left, or what Liam wants from her beyond the moment of his return. The ending leaves Maggie and Cal together, but Liam’s arrival puts their plans in question.

What Season 4 adds about Liam’s return
Season 4 continues Liam’s story as Maggie’s ex-husband. In a July 10, 2026 interview, creator and showrunner Roma Roth said Liam claims he returned to retrieve their marriage annulment so he can get a visa and go overseas to pursue work as a war reporter: “Liam claims that he’s only dropping by to retrieve his and Maggie’s marriage annulment so he can get a visa and head overseas to pursue his career as a war reporter.”
That is Liam’s stated reason for coming back, as described by Roth; it is later context, not information the Season 3 finale provides. The interview does not fill in every detail of the marriage’s history or establish all of its legal particulars. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 ending explainer

Yes. The CW describes Sullivan’s Crossing as based on Robyn Carr’s books. The novels are the source material, but they are not a substitute for the television finale’s explanation and may differ from the adaptation. The CW’s series page
