Despite the clip title’s “Trump Frees” phrasing, the Justice Department classifies the action as a commutation—not a pardon.
What does the SNL clip cover?
The official clip, titled “Weekend Update: Trump Frees George Santos, Young Republican Group Chat Leaks,” was published by Saturday Night Live on October 18, 2025. Its description identifies Colin Jost and Michael Che as the anchors and presents the segment as a look at the week’s biggest news. Watch the official SNL clip.
The clip’s title uses “frees” as comedy shorthand. The formal legal action involving Santos was a commutation, and the distinction matters when describing what happened.
Did Trump pardon George Santos?
No. The Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney records an October 17, 2025 commutation for George Anthony Devolder Santos. A commutation reduces or otherwise changes a sentence; it is not the same action as a pardon. The DOJ record is the appropriate reference for the legal classification, regardless of the clip’s wording.

The listed offenses were wire fraud in connection with the Party Program Scheme and aggravated identity theft. See the DOJ clemency record.
What was in the leaked Young Republicans group chat?
PBS NewsHour interviewed Politico reporter Emily Ngo about the investigation she conducted with colleague Jason Beeferman. Ngo said the reporters read 2,900 pages of private Telegram messages. She described participants as including top aides to New York state legislatures and a sitting Vermont state senator. The figure is Ngo’s account of the material the reporters reviewed, not an independently audited page count. Read or watch the PBS NewsHour interview.

In the same interview, Ngo said that, by her most recent count at that time, eight of the twelve chat members were out of their jobs. That was her contemporaneous account in October 2025, not a verified count of people’s current employment status.
What happened after the messages leaked?
The Washington Post reported on October 17, 2025, that the New York Republican State Committee voted to suspend authorization of the New York State Young Republicans following the report about the chat. State party chair Ed Cox described the messages as including racist and antisemitic language among leadership. This was an action involving the New York state chapter; it should not be read as a nationwide suspension of Young Republicans groups. Read The Washington Post’s report.
