The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) removed Amber Ruffin’s planned comedy performance from its April 26, 2025 dinner. The association said it wanted the evening to focus on journalism and the work it supports. The decision came after Ruffin made critical remarks about the Trump administration and deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich publicly criticized her selection. The public record establishes that sequence, but not the board’s full private reasoning or a single proven cause.
What happened to Amber Ruffin’s planned appearance?
The WHCA announced on February 4, 2025, that Ruffin would be the featured entertainer at its April 26 dinner in Washington, D.C. President Eugene Daniels called her “unique talents” an ideal fit for the political and cultural climate. The association described the dinner as an event honoring press freedom and roasting powerful people across the political spectrum. The WHCA announcement also explained that proceeds help fund association work, including awards and scholarships.
In late March, after Ruffin’s podcast comments circulated and Budowich criticized the choice, Daniels told members that the board had unanimously decided not to feature a comedian. The April 26 dinner went ahead without a comedy performance.
What did Ruffin say about Trump and the dinner?
In a Daily Beast podcast conversation about preparing for the dinner, Ruffin said she had been told to make sure her jokes addressed both sides equally, and said she would not do that. She also described Trump administration officials as “kind of a bunch of murderers.” CBS, ABC and The Washington Post reported the remarks. CBS News and ABC News covered both the comments and the board’s decision.

Why did the WHCA cancel the comedian?
Daniels’s public explanation focused on the dinner’s purpose, not on Ruffin by name. He wrote: “At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists.” CBS’s account of the message reported that the board would not feature a comedian.
The timing is also part of the story: Ruffin’s remarks circulated, Budowich criticized her and the WHCA’s selection, and the board then removed comedy from the program. The Washington Post and Axios reported on the criticism and cancellation. That sequence makes the controversy relevant context, but the association’s stated rationale was broader, and public reporting does not establish the board’s internal deliberations or prove that administration pressure was the sole cause.

What happened at the 2025 dinner?
The dinner proceeded on April 26 without a comedian. It recognized journalism award recipients and emphasized journalism and the First Amendment. President Donald Trump did not attend; his attendance had been undecided when the cancellation was reported. The dinner’s proceedings and Trump’s absence were reported by The Associated Press.
What did Ruffin say after the cancellation?
On April 30, Ruffin discussed the canceled appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Reflecting on the speech she had planned, she said, “And saying that out loud now makes me glad that I got canceled.” That was her later response, not an explanation from the WHCA for its decision. The Daily Beast reported on the interview and her comments.

Was the 2026 dinner cancellation connected to Ruffin?
No. The 2026 dinner was canceled after an armed man entered the Washington Hilton. The event was rescheduled and held on July 24, 2026, according to Le Monde. That later security incident was separate from the WHCA’s 2025 decision to remove the comedian.
