Joan Templeman, Richard Branson’s wife and partner of 50 years, died aged 80. Branson announced her death on November 25, 2025. At the time, the family had not disclosed a cause; a later inquest reported that she died from a pulmonary embolism arising from deep vein thrombosis. The coroner said the lack of anticoagulation probably caused or contributed to her death, while expressly stating that the case was not one of neglect.
What Richard Branson announced
Branson shared the news on social media on November 25, 2025. The Associated Press quoted his message: “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.” He also called her “my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.” The AP report and ABC News Australia’s account reported that the family had not specified a cause of death at that time.
What the later inquest reported about her death
In a report published September 9, 2026, The Independent described the findings heard at Westminster Coroner’s Court. It reported that Templeman was admitted to hospital on November 17, 2025, after a fall weeks earlier on Necker Island. The fall caused fractures to her pelvis and right hip. She died after a cardiac arrest at the Lister Hospital in Chelsea on November 24.
The inquest finding, as reported by The Independent, was that Templeman died from a pulmonary embolism arising from deep vein thrombosis. The report said she did not receive prophylactic anticoagulation between admission and death and did not have an immediate venous thromboembolism (VTE) assessment. Haematologist Dr George Adams told the inquest that appropriate anticoagulation would probably have prevented her death.

Senior coroner Professor Fiona Wilcox concluded that her death would likely have been prevented and that the lack of anticoagulation probably caused or contributed to it. Wilcox also said it was “not a case of neglect” and that there “wasn’t an absence of treatment.” Those qualifications matter: the finding reported is not an unqualified accusation of neglect or a determination of legal liability. The available account is a news report of court proceedings, not the full inquest record or an official coroner’s document. The Independent’s report provides the account of the evidence and conclusion.

In his later reflection, quoted by The Independent, Branson called Templeman “the shining star around which our family’s universe has always orbited.” He also said: “Life will never be the same without her.
