No: Katy Perry did not attend the 2024 Met Gala. Images showing her in elaborate floral gowns were AI-generated, and Perry shared a screenshot suggesting that her mother initially mistook one for a real look. Perry’s own post and the mismatch between the picture’s carpet and the 2024 event help explain what happened.
Was Katy Perry at the 2024 Met Gala?
No. On May 6, 2024, Perry posted that she could not attend because she had to work: “Couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.” PolitiFact reported the caption while checking images that appeared to show her at the event.
Were the pictures of Perry at the gala real?
No. The images circulating on social media were AI-generated, not photographs of Perry at the 2024 event. One showed her in a voluminous floral gown; another depicted her in a different green, floral look. There were no genuine Perry looks from that gala to compare against the fabricated images.
Did Perry’s mother think the picture was real?
Perry shared a screenshot of a text exchange in which her mother appeared to believe she had attended. In the screenshot, her mother wrote, “Didn’t know you went to the Met,” then praised the gown: “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.” Perry replied, “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!” PolitiFact reproduced the exchange Perry shared. It is evidence of this particular reaction, not a verified interview with her mother.

What clues showed the image was not from the 2024 event?
The carpet and setting
The 2024 Met Gala carpet was cream-colored with moss-green accents. The carpet in the floral-gown image looked more like the pattern used at the 2018 gala, with red edging and leaf-covered walls, though PolitiFact noted that it was not an exact match. The setting therefore did not corroborate the claim that the image came from the 2024 event. PolitiFact and the Associated Press both noted the carpet mismatch.
Visual oddities
Forbes reported that the second image had abnormalities in a thumb and one eye. Such details can prompt closer scrutiny, but they are not a dependable standalone test for whether an image is synthetic. Here, the decisive context was that Perry said she did not attend and the images were identified as AI-generated.

Who made the images?
The reporting did not establish a verified creator, prompt, or image-generation tool. The Associated Press said the source or sources were difficult to determine, so claims about who made the pictures, how they were produced, or why should be treated as speculation.

Forbes reported that one image had more than 8 million views and more than 270,000 likes on May 6, 2024. Those were figures reported at the time, not current totals. The episode also drew comment from Cayce Myers, a professor and director of graduate studies at Virginia Tech’s School of Communication. He told the AP, “It used to be that seeing is believing, and now seeing is not believing.”

The incident illustrates how a convincing, event-themed image can circulate as if it were a photograph—even reaching someone close to the person pictured. It does not establish how often people generally mistake AI images for real ones; the mother’s reaction is an anecdote, not a population-level measure.
