Christmas also matters differently from film to film: some stories are built around the holiday, while others use it as a setting or counterpoint.
Choose by mood and how much Christmas you want
| Film | Best fit | Christmas’s role | Content and comfort note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bad Santa (2003) | Raunchy, cynical comedy | Central: a conman takes a mall-Santa job as part of a store robbery scheme. | A U.S.-focused guide describes it as R-rated and flags profanity, sexual content, alcoholism and crude humor. The rating does not mean the film is sexually explicit. |
| The Ref (1994) | Sharp comedy about family and marital conflict | Central: a Christmas Eve burglary puts a Connecticut couple’s relationship in the spotlight. | The marital hostility and family friction may feel more uncomfortable than cozy. |
| Die Hard (1988) | Action thriller | Christmas-adjacent: Christmas Eve and an office party shape the setting, but the main story is a hostage thriller. | Choose it for action rather than a warm or holiday-focused comedy. |
| Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) | Neo-noir black comedy | Christmas-set: the holiday provides an ironic counterpoint to an unwholesome Los Angeles crime story. | A crime comedy with a deliberately cynical tone, not a conventional seasonal comfort watch. |
| Three Days of the Condor (1975) | Spy thriller | Christmas-backdrop: the setting informs the film’s question about togetherness. | A thriller rather than a comedy; the available source does not give a detailed content advisory. |
| Oh. What. Fun. (2025) | Parent-centered holiday comedy | Holiday-driven premise: Michelle Pfeiffer plays a mother who leaves family chaos for a Christmas adventure. | The available description establishes the premise, not a detailed content advisory or rating. |
For raunchy Christmas comedy
Bad Santa
This is the most direct match if you want an adult Christmas comedy with a proudly abrasive streak. The setup is holiday-specific: a conman uses a mall Santa job to help rob stores. Its profanity, sexual content, alcoholism and crude humor make it a poor bet for shared family viewing, even though “adult” should not be mistaken for a guarantee of explicit sex.
For Christmas with family friction
The Ref
A burglar takes a Connecticut couple hostage on Christmas Eve and gets drawn into their marital conflict. The holiday is integral to the setup, but the appeal is the sharp clash between people who are supposed to be celebrating together. Pick it when you want family dysfunction rather than sentiment; skip it if that hostility would spoil the evening.
For action instead of cozy holiday cheer
Die Hard
The Christmas Eve setting and office party are substantial parts of the film, but its engine is a hostage thriller. That makes it a useful choice for viewers who want a seasonal setting without a Christmas-comedy structure. It is more accurate to call it Christmas-adjacent than to suggest the holiday drives the whole plot.

For crime stories with Christmas in the frame
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
This Christmas-set neo-noir black comedy uses the season as an ironic contrast with its crime story. AP critic Jake Coyle called it a film “worth revisiting perennially whether or not it technically qualifies as a Christmas movie.” It suits viewers who like fast, crooked crime comedy more than traditional holiday warmth.
Three Days of the Condor
If you want a thriller rather than another comedy, this spy film offers Christmas as a meaningful backdrop. Coyle points to the holiday setting’s connection to the film’s question about togetherness. It is a quieter, more reflective seasonal fit than a Christmas-centered comic plot.

Oh. What. Fun.
Michelle Pfeiffer stars as a mother who leaves family chaos for a Christmas adventure, a premise that puts a parent’s experience at the center. Access can mean different things: a title may be included with a subscription, available to rent digitally, or available to purchase. These are separate routes, and a film’s presence in a service catalog can change by country and date. Amazon’s holiday guide distinguishes rental or purchase, Prime Original and inclusion with Prime rather than treating them as interchangeable. Before settling on a movie, search the title in your local service or digital storefront and confirm the access label and price there.
