Santa Lucia Day, or Lucia, is celebrated in Sweden on 13 December. The familiar celebration is a procession led by Lucia in a white gown and candle crown, joined by attendants and often star boys; participants may carry candles and sing Lucia and Christmas songs. At home, a small gathering, a simple procession and saffron buns called lussekatter offer an easy way to take part. These customs are familiar, not compulsory: the Swedish tradition has changed over time and has no single fixed form.
Choose a celebration that fits your setting
There is no required scale or checklist. Nordiska museet describes Lucia celebrations in both homes and institutions, so you can adapt the familiar elements to the people and space available.
| Setting | A practical approach |
|---|---|
| At home | Gather family or friends, make a short procession if you like, sing a Lucia or Christmas song, and serve lussekatter. |
| At a school, workplace or community event | Arrange a procession with Lucia, attendants and, if participants wish, star boys or a Santa. Participants can carry candles and sing together. |
Roles and costumes are options rather than historical requirements. Earlier processions included different roles and gender-crossing dress; a particular appearance, including being blonde, is not a cultural-historical rule.
What happens in a Lucia procession?
In the familiar modern version, Lucia leads a procession wearing white and a crown of candles. Attendants follow, and groups may also include star boys and sometimes a Santa. The group carries candles and sings Lucia songs and other Christmas music. The exact line-up can vary; a small gathering need not recreate a large public procession.

Use candles thoughtfully around children, loose clothing and decorations. Battery-powered lights are a practical alternative when an open flame is unsuitable; the important point is the procession and shared observance, not a particular candle type.
Serve lussekatter, the saffron buns associated with Lucia
Lussekatter are sweet saffron buns, commonly formed into an S-shape today. They are closely associated with 13 December, but their history is more layered than the modern shape suggests. Nordiska museet traces the name to duivekater, a sweet wheat bread known in Holland and northern Germany that was probably brought to Gothenburg by Dutch people in the 17th century. A Swedish-sounding form, “dyvelskatter,” became associated with “devil’s cats”; later the buns were linked to Lucia Day and called lussekatter. Saffron began to be used toward the end of the 19th century.

Why Lucia is celebrated on 13 December
The date comes from Saint Lucia’s feast day in the Swedish Catholic calendar. According to the saint’s legend, Lucia of Syracuse was a Christian woman who lived in Sicily in the late 3rd century and died on 13 December 304. That is the traditional account of the saint, rather than an independently verified biography. Sweden’s Catholic calendar marked Lucia on this date until the 16th century.
Lucia night also acquired folk beliefs in Sweden, including stories of supernatural dangers and predictions about the coming year. Those beliefs are part of the tradition’s history, not instructions for how people must celebrate today.

How the modern Swedish tradition developed
The procession familiar today is not an unchanged ancient custom. Lucia celebrations draw on several influences, including regional festivities, religious stories, medieval processions and music. The tradition associated with today’s celebration developed in western Sweden in the 19th century, then spread through university towns and organizations before becoming widespread nationally in the 20th century. The familiar procession form became common in the 1950s.
Skansen began Lucia celebrations in the 1890s while presenting folk customs from western Sweden. In 1928, the newspaper Stockholm Dagblad held a Lucia competition; the winner was carried in a procession with electric lights in her crown, and other newspapers adopted the competition idea.

Songs and star boys have their own histories
The familiar Lucia melody comes from the Italian song Sul mare luccica, also known as Santa Lucia, probably of folk origin. Swedish lyrics were written in the 1920s. Star boys, meanwhile, have roots in medieval Catholic plays and later Christmas and Epiphany processions. These elements came together over time rather than originating from one single source.

There is no historically compulsory look for Lucia or fixed roster of participants. Nordiska museet notes that late-19th-century processions included Lusse brides, women and men, and that dressing across gender lines was common. The 20th-century image of Lucia as blonde has no cultural-historical basis. Choose roles and clothing that suit your group instead of treating one appearance or casting choice as the authentic standard.
