Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys met years before they played a married couple on The Americans. Their own recollections place that first encounter at a kickball party around 2002; press reports trace their relationship becoming publicly visible in 2013 and confirmed in 2014. They have one child together, and Rhys said in 2025 that they had not gotten around to getting married.
How Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys first met
Russell and Rhys have said they first crossed paths around 2002, at a kickball party. Recalling the encounter on Watch What Happens Live, Rhys said he drunkenly asked Russell for her number and left a message but received no reply. In a later account, Russell remembered the story when Rhys brought it up over lunch as they prepared to work together on The Americans. ELLE’s timeline recounts their recollections; ABC News also reported that they met at a party about a decade before the FX drama.
The story is based on the actors’ later recollections, not a contemporaneous account from 2002. It does establish that they had met before their screen partnership, but not that they were dating then.

2012: Cast as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings

Spring 2014: Their relationship reported publicly
After the pair were spotted at a performance of The Library at New York’s Public Theater, People confirmed they were together, according to ELLE’s timeline. When Rhys won the lead-actor Emmy for The Americans in 2018, he thanked Russell and joked that she had warned him, “If you propose to me, I’ll punch you clean in the mouth.” Us Weekly reproduced the line as part of his humorous speech. It was not an engagement announcement.
