She had vacationed there for years, and a visit for her 65th birthday helped her decide to make the move. The transition came as her children left home, a change she has described as painful at first and fulfilling later.
Why did Andie MacDowell choose South Carolina?
MacDowell had vacationed in the Charleston area for about ten years, using trips there to relax, recharge and reconnect with nature. During a family visit to South Carolina for her 65th birthday, she found a house and began to see the area as somewhere she wanted to live.
In an interview with Erika Janes for SHE Media’s Flow Space, MacDowell said she had considered moving sooner but wanted to stay near her children. Turning 65 prompted her to think about what she wanted to do with her life. Her conclusion was direct: “I want to live here. That’s what I want to do. And it was the right decision.”
Her sister handled the move after MacDowell had to leave for work. The account identifies her home as being in the Charleston area; it does not establish a more specific town or neighborhood.

How did becoming an empty nester affect her?
The move coincided with her children leaving home, but MacDowell has not described the empty nest as the sole reason she relocated. In the Flow Space profile, she said she had delayed moving because she wanted to be close to her children. Her decision also reflected a long-standing connection to the region and a desire to choose where she wanted to live.
In a January 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, MacDowell described the initial adjustment as difficult: “Once my kids left, I felt this huge void in my life, because they were so important to me.” She said her daughter Margaret had told her she was supposed to be having the time of her life, even though at first she was not.

By the time of that conversation, MacDowell said she was happier than she had been in a long time. She also described finding it easy to socialize in a community with many people her age. In the Flow Space profile, she characterized her life as comfortable rather than lonely or unhappy. Her account is a personal one: it describes a hard adjustment that became more positive, not a universal formula for empty-nest life.

No. “Left Hollywood” in coverage of MacDowell’s move refers to a change of residence, not retirement from acting. The January 2025 report noted that she was starring in Hallmark’s The Way Home while discussing her move and her life as an empty nester.
