Hoda Kotb said she wanted her daughters to have more chances for outdoor play and room to grow: grass underfoot, a yard, bike rides along the street and stairs to run up and down. She also described the move as a fresh start in a new town and school. Those reasons are distinct from her later decision to leave Today, which she announced in September 2024 and explained in terms of spending more time with her daughters and mother.
She wanted her daughters to have outdoor space
In an August 2024 interview with People, as quoted in Today’s follow-up coverage, Kotb described the childhood she hoped the move would make possible: “I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, and play in the yard, and ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs.”
Her explanation focused on everyday experiences for her children, rather than on real estate features or a general claim that suburban life suits every family. The yard, street and stairs were part of the kind of childhood she wanted them to enjoy.
A new town meant a new school and routine
After the move, Kotb described starting over in a new town and school. On Today on September 4, 2024, she spoke about walking her daughters to school on their first day. Today reported her saying: “We went for our first day of school, I carried a coffee and I had sneakers [on], and I walked my kids to school like normal people. It was awesome.”

She called the school walk a privilege and recognized that many working parents cannot make that part of the day. Her comments convey how the new neighborhood routine felt to her, while acknowledging that it is not an option available to every family.
Her departure from Today was a related but separate decision
Kotb announced on September 26, 2024, that she would leave Today. In her memo and on-air announcement, she said her daughters and mother “need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie,” according to the Associated Press.

The family priorities she described at that announcement echo the importance she placed on her daughters’ lives after the move, but the events should not be collapsed into one cause. A syndicated real-estate report said she purchased the suburban home in April 2024, months before her September departure announcement. Kotb’s own explanation for the move centered on outdoor play, a new school and a different neighborhood rhythm; her stated reason for leaving the show was to give her family more of her time.
