Their synchronized speech drew attention during a 2025 interview about a frightening incident involving their mother, but ABC coverage shows they were speaking together years before that interview.
Who are the twins who went viral?
Bridgette and Paula Powers, known as the Twinnies, are identical twin sisters from Queensland, Australia. They run Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue, a seabird rehabilitation centre in Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast.
The sisters attracted viral attention after a 7NEWS Queensland interview about an armed carjacking involving their mother. Viewers noticed that they recounted events using the same words and inflections, often speaking at the same time. ABC’s later account notes that their delivery can also be slightly delayed rather than perfectly simultaneous.
The April 23, 2025 People report described them as 50; ABC’s May 12, 2025 account described them as 51. Those ages reflect the dates of publication, not a current age.

What have Bridgette and Paula said about speaking in sync?
In a guest appearance on The Project, the sisters said: “It just happens and we dunno why, but we have tried to talk separately but we’re not ourselves, it’s not us and it’s very hard.” Paula added, “I wish I could answer that question, it just happens.” Their account is that speaking together feels natural to them; it does not establish a cause.
They also responded to criticism of their synchronized speech: “We don’t care about the critics. We tell people if you can’t stand listening to us simply switch off the TV.”

Did they start talking in sync for the viral interview?
No. ABC Australian Story’s 2021 coverage documented the sisters speaking in unison and described their close bond years before the 2025 interview. In that program, they also spoke about feeling incomplete when separated. This earlier reporting makes clear that the synchronized delivery was not something newly adopted for the carjacking story.
Is there a scientific explanation for why they talk together?
The accounts establish what the sisters say about their experience, but not a scientific explanation for it. In ABC’s 2021 program, epigenetics researcher Jeff Craig offered an interpretation: “Because they spent their entire lives together from in the womb, they kind of know and they respond to the same situation in the same way.” That is Craig’s explanation in the program, not a demonstrated causal finding about the Powers sisters.

The reporting does not establish that the twins consciously rehearse their speech, share a mind, or have a diagnosed condition. Their own answer remains that synchronized speech simply happens and that they do not know why.

Their rescue work is an important part of their story beyond the viral interview. In April 2025, 7NEWS described Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue as a 24/7 seabird rehabilitation centre and reported that the sisters had devoted 25 years to the work. The outlet quoted them saying, “We rescue seabirds, we rehabilitate them, and we give them the care they need,” and, “We never give up on a bird.”
