Here are selected, dated updates on the series and its actors; the available reporting does not establish a comprehensive 2026 update for every performer.
Where is the ‘Downton Abbey’ cast now?
Many of the familiar performers returned for The Grand Finale, while their careers continue beyond the Crawley family and its household. One clearly documented example is Elizabeth McGovern, who took on a new role as a writer and stage performer in 2025. The film’s cast also included several new additions.
Elizabeth McGovern wrote and starred in a 2025 play
McGovern wrote and starred as Ava Gardner in Ava: The Secret Conversations, a play based on Peter Evans’ book about Gardner and the conversations he had while assigned to ghostwrite her memoir. In a September 2025 Associated Press report, McGovern described seeing other people embrace material that began in her head. The production documents a specific project that year; it is not a full account of her work in 2026. Associated Press, September 2025.
The final film brought back much of the ensemble
Returning performers named in Focus Features’ announcement included Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, Douglas Reith and Dominic West. What happened to the series?
The television drama began in 2010 and ran for six seasons. Its story continued in three feature films: the first in 2019, the second in 2022, and The Grand Finale in 2025. The final film, directed by Simon Curtis and written by creator Julian Fellowes, moves the Crawleys and their staff into the 1930s. Focus Features’ synopsis describes Mary facing public scandal as the family confronts financial trouble and the next generation takes Downton forward. Focus Features’ official film page.
The studio and the creators described the 2025 film as the conclusion of the fifteen-year story. That gives the saga a planned ending without establishing that no future story could ever be made. In a September 2025 AP report, producer Gareth Neame said, “If this is where it ends, I’m happy. If there’s no further visit to Downton, we have a beginning, a middle and an end.” Fellowes has also acknowledged that future stories cannot be ruled out absolutely. Associated Press, September 2025.

How did the cast reflect on returning?
Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley, told the AP that the cast had not expected to reunite after finishing the television show: “We said goodbye when we finished the TV show and didn’t think we’d ever come back.” He later joked, “I said, it’s like herding cats, he’ll never get us together again. And, blow me down, he did, not once but three times.”
Fellowes reflected on the series’ significance to his life in the same report: “It’s been a huge chunk of my life. And when I die, I think it’ll probably be the only job anyone remembers. But I hope it’s been happy.” AP also reported that the first two films, released in 2019 and 2022, had earned more than $287 million worldwide combined as of its 2025 report; that figure is not the three-film total. How can you revisit the six seasons?
PBS announced that all six seasons would be available through PBS Passport beginning March 1, 2026. Passport is a U.S. public-television member benefit, and the announcement alone does not confirm today’s catalog status or access outside the United States. Check the current PBS listing and your local station’s Passport terms before relying on it. PBS Masterpiece.
