The first Vatican-released images of Pope Francis in an open casket showed him in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta, where he had lived. They were separate from the later public viewing in St. Peter’s Basilica. Francis died on 21 April 2025, aged 88; his funeral Mass was held on 26 April, and he was buried at Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major.

The Vatican released images of Francis lying in an open casket in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta. The Associated Press described him wearing papal vestments, with his hands folded over a rosary. These images came from the initial period after his death, not from the public lying in state that followed in St. Peter’s Basilica. Where and when did the public viewing take place?
On Wednesday, 23 April, Francis’s body was carried to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City for public viewing. Mourners were able to pay their respects there through Friday evening. The Associated Press reported that about a quarter-million people attended during that period. The coffin was sealed on the eve of the funeral. When was the funeral, and where was Pope Francis buried?
The funeral Mass took place on Saturday, 26 April 2025. After the liturgy, Francis’s coffin was taken to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, where he was buried. The funeral Mass and the burial therefore took place at different locations. The Associated Press report
