TIME’s account places the duel in Paris in December 1386 and explains that the surviving historical record has not resolved whether Le Gris was guilty. Marguerite’s accusation and Le Gris’s denial are central to the story, but the film’s portrayal cannot settle the historical question. TIME quotes Le Gris’s lawyer, Jean Le Coq, from a private diary: “No one really knew the truth of the matter.”

Ridley Scott directed The Last Duel. Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon wrote the screenplay. The principal cast includes Jodie Comer as Marguerite, Matt Damon as Jean de Carrouges, Adam Driver as Jacques Le Gris, and Ben Affleck as Count Pierre d’Alençon. The studio lists the film’s U.S. release date as October 15, 2021, and rates it R.

How long is The Last Duel?
Published listings disagree, so there is no single runtime supported across the cited sources. The Venice Biennale’s 2021 listing gives 152 minutes; Disney+ displays 2 hours 35 minutes on its listing accessed October 4, 2026; and the 20th Century Studios page displays 2 hours 0 minutes on that date. Check the listing for the specific service, territory, or edition you plan to watch.
Where was it filmed?
The Walt Disney Company reports that photography took place in France from February 14 to March 12, 2020, and in Ireland from September 4 to October 23, 2020. French locations included Château de Beynac, Château de Fénelon, Monpazier, and Château Berzé-le-Châtel. Constructed interiors were filmed at Ardmore Studios in Ireland. The production feature says the duel setting drew on research that included surviving court documents and Jager’s book.
