The Sandman is Neil Gaiman’s DC comic series about Dream, the ruler of the Dreaming, whose capture and long absence unsettle both the dream world and waking life. It has been adapted separately for television by Netflix and as a full-cast audio production directed by Dirk Maggs.
What is The Sandman about?
DC describes the story as beginning when Dream, also known as the Master of Dreams, is unexpectedly captured and held for a century. While he is absent, events in the Dreaming and the waking world are affected. The story follows his efforts to restore order and confront the consequences of his long existence.
The name can refer to three related but distinct works: the original comic, Netflix’s television adaptation, and the audio adaptation. The comic is the source work; the screen and audio versions are adaptations rather than different editions of the same production.
How are the comic, television series and audio adaptation different?
| Version | What it is | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| DC comic | Neil Gaiman’s comic series created for DC. | The source work. DC lists collected formats including a box set and an Absolute edition. |
| Netflix television series | A screen adaptation based on the comic. | DC lists the series as “The Sandman (2022 – 2025).” Netflix classifies it as dark fantasy and based on a graphic novel; DC categorizes it under drama, horror and science fiction. |
| Audible audio series | A full-cast audio adaptation of the DC comic, directed by Dirk Maggs. | A separate adaptation from the Netflix show. Audible’s series page presents three books. |
The genre labels reflect different platform classifications rather than competing definitions. If you are looking for the comic’s original story, choose a comic edition; if you want a screen or performed-audio interpretation, choose the corresponding adaptation.

Which Sandman comic edition should you read?
DC’s The Sandman Box Set is described as a slipcased set collecting volumes 1–14. That identifies the contents of this particular set, but does not by itself establish that every format sold as a collected edition contains the same material.
DC also lists The Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, an Absolute Edition. The official product information available here does not provide a complete comparison of all editions’ contents, dimensions or current prices. Before buying, check the exact edition and volume, its contents, and the listing for your market.

Is the Netflix series based on the comic?
Yes. Netflix’s 2019 announcement explicitly described its series as based on The Sandman comic book series created for DC by Neil Gaiman. The announcement named Allan Heinberg as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with Gaiman and David S. Goyer also named as writers and executive producers at that point. For current series credits, DC’s series listing is the more appropriate reference than that launch announcement.
