Talent agent Michael Greene confirmed on July 17, 2024, that Greene Talent had parted ways with Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass after the band’s Sydney concert and Gass’s onstage remark about Donald Trump. The split followed the backlash, Gass’s apology and the cancellation of Tenacious D’s remaining tour dates.
What happened at the Sydney show?
On July 14, 2024, during a Tenacious D performance in Sydney, Jack Black asked Gass to make a birthday wish before he blew out candles. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The line referred to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the previous day. Videos of the moment circulated online; reports said it initially drew laughter at the concert before provoking backlash. TIME’s account of the incident and CBS News’ coverage describe the remark and its context.
What did Gass’s agent say?
On July 17, Greene told Rolling Stone UK, “We have parted ways after what happened in Sydney.” That statement directly confirmed the agency split and tied it to the Sydney incident. The Rolling Stone UK report is the source for Greene’s confirmation.
How did Gass and Black respond?
Gass apologized
Gass described the improvised line as “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.” He said he did not condone violence and apologized for his severe lack of judgment. His apology acknowledged the seriousness of the remark rather than dismissing it as a joke. TIME and CBS News reported his statement.

Black halted the tour
Black said he had been blindsided by the remark and stated, “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.” He also announced that the remaining Tenacious D tour dates would not go ahead and that future creative plans were on hold. TIME’s report and CBS News’ coverage include his response.
What is known about the band’s future?
In August 2024, Black said the duo would return “when it feels right,” according to the Los Angeles Times. In interviews published January 22, 2026, Gass said he and Black had worked through their dispute and were on good terms. He described the conversation as difficult and said the band would return. Those comments show that the two had repaired their relationship and expressed an intention to continue, but they do not establish a reunion date, tour or recording schedule. Louder and MusicRadar covered the January 2026 interviews.
