The later finding reported by UPI attributed his death to liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication. A coroner’s spokesman said the medications contributed to his death but were not at lethal levels; the report also said no alcohol was detected.
What was Truman Capote’s cause of death?
UPI reported on September 13, 1984, that the Los Angeles County coroner’s office determined Capote died from liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication. Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein. The report does not describe the medications as a fatal overdose: coroner’s spokesman Bill Gold said they were contributory but not lethal. He also said toxicology testing detected no alcohol.
Gold characterized the death as being “essentially” from natural causes. That description and the report’s mention of multiple drug intoxication are not contradictory: the account presented Capote’s underlying health problems as central and the medications as a contributing factor, not a lethal dose by themselves.
Why did early reports say the cause was unknown?
The first reports were issued while the investigation was still under way. On August 25, police described the death as apparently natural but said an autopsy was needed to establish the cause. On August 28, The Washington Post reported that the autopsy was inconclusive at that stage and that further testing was expected. It also reported an infection in Capote’s legs and said a heart attack and cerebral hemorrhage had been ruled out.

The September 13 UPI report gave the later coroner finding. The different accounts reflect different points in the investigation, rather than evidence of competing final causes.
What is known about his final days and health?
Contemporary reports described Capote as having a history of alcohol and drug problems and deteriorating health. That background is relevant context, but it does not establish that alcohol was present when he died: the later UPI account specifically said none was detected. The reported cause should therefore be described as liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication, with the coroner’s spokesman characterizing the medications as contributory but nonlethal.
