Bitconned is a 2024 Netflix documentary about Centra Tech, whose founders sold CTR tokens in 2017 while promoting a cryptocurrency debit card and financial services. The film’s central lesson is about how this particular scheme used claims of legitimacy to attract investors—not that cryptocurrency as a whole is fraudulent.
What is Bitconned about?
Directed by Bryan Storkel, Bitconned follows Centra Tech and its co-founder Ray Trapani. Netflix describes a story told through interviews with Trapani, people connected to him, a victim, reporter Nathaniel Popper and investigators. The company’s pitch tied a cryptocurrency token sale to a debit card that was presented as a way to spend digital assets, alongside other financial services.
Trapani’s outlook is captured in a line Netflix Tudum attributes to him in the documentary: “Anytime you find a market like that, you just have to figure out how to exploit [it].” It frames the film’s focus on the people behind Centra Tech and how they marketed the venture.
What was Centra Tech selling?
In 2017, Centra Tech offered CTR tokens through an initial coin offering, or ICO. The company promoted the tokens alongside a planned cryptocurrency debit card and asserted that it had relationships with established financial networks. According to the SEC’s April 2, 2018 announcement, the offering raised more than $32 million from thousands of investors.

That figure describes Centra Tech’s offering, not the scale or prevalence of fraud in the broader cryptocurrency market.
What did the SEC allege?
In its 2018 complaint announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that Centra Tech offered unregistered investments through CTR tokens and misled investors about the venture. The agency said the supposed Visa and Mastercard relationships did not exist. It also alleged that the company used fabricated executive biographies, misleading marketing and paid celebrity promotion to make the project appear more credible.

The SEC’s allegations described a gap between the card and financial services Centra Tech advertised and the relationships and capabilities it claimed to have. The agency’s release quoted Enforcement Division Cyber Unit Chief Robert A. Cohen urging caution about digital-asset investments marketed with claims that seem too good to be true. The claims in the complaint should be distinguished from the later guilty pleas, sentences and civil judgments.
What happened to Ray Trapani and Centra Tech?
Netflix recounts the co-founders’ criminal pleas and sentences. The SEC’s May 19, 2022 release separately confirms that all three co-founders pleaded guilty and were sentenced, and reports final civil judgments against them. The agency’s release records disgorgement amounts, including prejudgment interest, and says each was deemed satisfied by criminal forfeiture orders:

These figures are civil disgorgement amounts, not a report of payments received by individual investors. The cited SEC release does not establish how much any investor recovered. The sentence information is a record of the outcomes reported by Netflix and the SEC, not a statement about anyone’s current custody status.
How to read the documentary alongside the official record
The documentary provides a narrative account centered on interviews and the people involved. The SEC’s 2018 release describes the allegations in its complaint; its 2022 release summarizes later guilty pleas, sentences and final civil judgments. Keeping those source types and dates distinct helps clarify which claims were allegations and which outcomes were later reported.

The case offers a specific warning about claims used to sell an investment: a polished campaign or a familiar company name is not proof that a promised partnership or product exists. It does not, by itself, establish how common crypto fraud is.
