Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 Direct centered on the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., announcing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and bringing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to Nintendo Switch. It also showed a substantial update on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and revealed new games, editions, downloadable content, and partner titles. The dates below are those Nintendo announced at the time; several have since passed, and game dates can vary by region.
Mario’s 40th anniversary led the presentation
Shigeru Miyamoto opened Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 event with activities marking 40 years since the original Super Mario Bros. launched in Japan on September 13, 1985. The anniversary segment paired a new animated film announcement with the return of two celebrated 3D Mario games. Nintendo’s event recap covers the full presentation.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The new animated film’s announced title is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The Nintendo and Illumination announcement set the US release for April 3, 2026, with the same date applying to many additional markets. Japan’s announced date is April 24, 2026; selected territories were scheduled for release at various points in April, so April 3 is not a single worldwide date.
The cast announced at the time included Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Miyamoto were named as producers. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic were set to return as directors, with Matthew Fogel writing the screenplay and Brian Tyler composing the music.
