But the response was not unanimous: some critics found the sequel slight, crowded or too dependent on nostalgia. The early reviews suggested a lively return to Burton’s sensibility, not a consensus that the film matched the 1988 original.
What critics praised in the first reviews
Reviews began appearing on August 28, 2024, ahead of the film’s scheduled US nationwide theatrical release on September 6 and international release beginning September 4, according to Warner Bros. Pictures’ official film site. The early praise focused less on the sequel reinventing the property than on Burton returning to the dark comedy and eccentric imagery associated with his earlier work.
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup, updated November 19, 2024, characterizes critics as mostly welcoming that return. Ema Sasic of Next Best Picture called the film “just as funny, vibrant, and campy.” Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict wrote, “Miraculously, it represents Tim Burton getting his groove back, successfully returning to the dark comedy and outrageous visuals that marked his extraordinary early work.”
Keaton’s return as Betelgeuse was another source of pleasure for reviewers, alongside the film’s practical effects and macabre energy. In a contemporary review published August 28, 2024, Time critic Stephanie Zacharek summed up the appeal this way: “Burton has just allowed himself to be silly and have fun.”

Why the response was not unanimous
The same ingredients that delighted some critics struck others as repetition. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described the movie as “a piece of fan service” and argued that it lacked the original’s “monster-kitsch jolt.” On Metacritic’s critic page, Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson offered a sharper negative response, criticizing the humor as limp and the sentiment as canned.
Those reactions point to a real divide in the early reviews: whether the film’s familiar Burton touches feel like a welcome revival or a substitute for the surprise of the 1988 film. Some critics enjoyed the jokes, performers and returning visual world on their own terms; others wanted a sequel with more freshness or force.

Does the sequel work if you liked the original?
The early response suggests it may, particularly if what you want is more of Burton’s macabre visual comedy and Keaton’s mischievous performance. The qualification is that enjoying those elements is not the same as finding the sequel as original or potent as the first film. A later analysis in The Atlantic also raises the question of how much new visual ground the sequel breaks.
The premise brings three generations of the Deetz family back to Winter River after a family tragedy. Warner Bros.’ synopsis says Lydia’s daughter Astrid discovers the town model and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife. Burton directed; Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the screenplay, from a story by Gough, Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith. That family-and-Afterlife setup gives the returning world new characters and conflicts, though it does not resolve the critical question of whether the film feels fresh.

How the later review scores compare with the first wave
Scores found on review aggregators later on should not be mistaken for an embargo-day reading of the response. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup displays a 76% Tomatometer, but its page was updated November 19, 2024; it does not establish that figure as the score when the first reviews appeared.
Metacritic’s page, accessed October 4, 2026, shows a 62 Metascore from 61 critic reviews: 38 positive, 20 mixed and 3 negative. That is a later, changeable aggregate snapshot, not the score at the first-review moment. It helps illustrate why “mostly encouraging” is more accurate than “unanimously acclaimed.”
