OOMF usually means “one of my followers” or “one of my friends.” It is a way to refer to someone indirectly, without naming them. The surrounding post tells you which meaning—and what tone—the writer intends.
What does OOMF stand for?
The acronym has two common expansions:
- One of my followers: a person who follows the poster, especially in social-media usage.
- One of my friends: someone the poster regards as a friend, including an online-only connection.
Jeremy O. Harris described the friend sense in a 2022 New York Times Style Magazine interview: “An oomf is an ‘O.O.M.F.’ — ‘one of my friends,’ as in someone you know only in a digital space, from Twitter or Tumblr.” In practice, context matters: a post about followers may point to the first expansion, while a personal or online relationship may suggest the second.
How is OOMF used on Twitter/X?
On Twitter, now called X, OOMF can appear in a sentence as a noun or as the hashtag #OOMF. It lets a poster talk about a follower or friend without identifying that person by name. The reference may be a subtweet, a shout-out, a complaint, or a casual observation.
For example, “Which OOMF wants free concert tickets?” uses the term for an indirect offer to a follower or friend. In a critical post, the same acronym can point to someone the writer is complaining about. OOMF itself does not signal whether the post is kind or hostile; read the surrounding words and context.

What does OOMF mean on TikTok?
A 2022 terminology guide from the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts lists OOMF as “One of my followers” and notes its use on TikTok. That supports the follower meaning as a possible interpretation there, but does not establish how prevalent the term is today or identify a separate TikTok-specific meaning. As elsewhere, infer the intended sense from the post.
Can OOMF be positive, neutral, or negative?
Yes. OOMF can introduce an affectionate or admiring mention, a neutral reference, or a pointed subtweet. The acronym’s indirectness is constant; the attitude is not. A complimentary shout-out and a complaint can use the same term, so do not assume a post is critical—or friendly—based on OOMF alone.

When did OOMF originate, and how do you pronounce it?
Dictionary.com reports that the hashtag #oomf was used for “one of my followers” by March 2010 and gained traction in 2011. Those dates mark documented hashtag use, not a proven first use of the acronym: the creator and exact creation date are unknown, according to Dictionary.com.
Wiktionary gives the UK pronunciation as /uːmf/ and the US pronunciation as /umf/. The spelling also resembles the older word oomph, meaning extra energy or impact, and can appear as a sound or interjection. In a social-media post about a person or followers, the acronym is usually the likely reading; in other contexts, consider the sentence before assuming that meaning.
