Taylor was Boyega’s childhood friend; the actor was eight when Taylor died. The film is scheduled to air on BBC Two on 5 October 2026, with planned availability on BBC iPlayer after broadcast.
What did John Boyega say about Damilola Taylor?
Boyega has described the lasting effect of Taylor’s death and the difficulty of returning to memories of their childhood. Speaking to JN Benjamin in The Guardian about the documentary, he said, “The psychological impact is something that definitely stayed with me.”
When asked what was difficult about making the film, Boyega answered, “Poverty,” referring to childhood memories the filming brought back. The interview presents these as his reflections on the process; they are not dialogue quoted from the documentary.
Boyega and his sister Grace attended Oliver Goldsmith primary school when Taylor arrived in the UK. Grace was assigned to help show Taylor around, and Boyega recalled, “I stayed because I found him hilarious.” Read the Guardian interview.

The BBC describes the programme as returning to Taylor’s story through new testimony, revisiting his final months and the years of youth violence that followed his death. These descriptions set out the programme’s stated scope; they do not establish what new conclusions it reaches.
The BBC says Boyega was eight when Taylor died and among the last people to see him alive. That is the broadcaster’s account; it should not be taken to imply more about the circumstances than the BBC listing states.
