The plan includes two attractions—a Maleficent-inspired coaster and a Magic Mirror-hosted dark ride—plus dining and shopping. Disney had not announced an opening date in its official updates reviewed as of October 4, 2026.
What is Villains Land at Disney World?
Disney first announced a villains-themed Magic Kingdom land at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim on August 10, 2024. The company confirmed the official name, Villains Land, in an August 2026 update, which also provided the first substantial account of the land’s story and attractions. Disney described the project as part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. D23’s 2024 announcement and Disney’s 2026 update document those announcements.
The premise begins in a foreboding forest, where an evil wish has broken and corrupted a Wishing Well. Its poisoned magic spreads through the forest, drawing villains who want the power left in the well and conjure lairs to suit themselves. Disney calls this an original take on familiar classic animated villains.
Disney says the land will be similar in scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. That is a qualitative comparison, not a published acreage figure; it does not establish equal land area, attraction count, capacity or visitor experience. The company has announced dining and shopping, but has not named restaurants or described menus in the updates reviewed.

What rides will be in Villains Land?
Disney has announced two attractions. The concepts are public, but detailed specifications are not: the reviewed announcements do not identify ride systems, technical details, capacity or height requirements.
A Maleficent-inspired coaster
The coaster is described as a journey through enchanted briars around Maleficent’s mountaintop fortress, ending in a face-to-face encounter with her. Imagineers say it will include elements they have not attempted on similar attractions, but Disney has not disclosed what those elements are or how the coaster will operate.

Disney has not named the other villains featured in this attraction.
Which Disney villains will appear?
Disney’s story announcement names Cruella, the Evil Queen and Dr. Facilier as villains drawn to the Wishing Well’s remaining power. Maleficent is central to the coaster concept, while the Evil Queen’s palace provides the setting for the Mirror-hosted dark ride. Disney describes the attractions as featuring villains, but has not published a complete character lineup.

How Imagineers are shaping the land
In an August 2025 design account, Imagineering said its team started with the animated source material and consulted artists responsible for those characters. Imagineers also described research trips to Paris and Barcelona, where they studied Parisian Art Nouveau and Barcelona’s Modernisme—their forms, scale, color and decorative motifs. The team coined “Conjured Architecture” for a design approach that blends historical architectural elements with fantastical settings, aiming to translate villains’ animated appearances into a built environment. Disney’s account is available in its report on the architectural inspirations.

At the original announcement, then Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro called the project “a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be.” In 2026, D’Amaro said, “Since the beginning, our Disney Villains have given us endless possibilities to tell new stories. In this new land, you’ll see storytelling on a grand scale that only Disney can deliver.” Walt Disney Imagineering executive creative director Caroline May described the addition as a way to expand Magic Kingdom’s storytelling while remaining true to its legacy and fairytale roots. These are Disney’s promotional statements, not independent assessments of the project.
