Chris Pine auditioned for Ryan Atwood on The O.C., but Ben McKenzie got the part. Casting director Patrick Rush later said Pine read very well and recalled that his severe skin problems influenced the decision. That is Rush’s retrospective account, not proof that acne was the sole reason Pine was not cast.

Rush discussed Pine’s audition in the 2023 oral history Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History, as reported by entertainment outlets. TVLine quoted Rush saying Pine was “really, really, really good,” then describing Pine’s skin as “really really bad” at the time and recalling that the issue “broke my heart” because Rush himself had acne as a child. Rush’s recollection connects Pine’s skin to the casting decision, but it does not establish that acne was the only factor. It is a retrospective account of an audition, not a complete record of the production’s casting deliberations.
Who played Ryan Atwood?
Ben McKenzie was cast as Ryan Atwood, the central character Pine had auditioned to play. Pine’s audition is the connection to The O.C.; he did not appear as Ryan in the series. (People via Yahoo)

What Pine said about his acne years later
On the May 9, 2024 episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Pine acknowledged the story and described having awful skin as a teenager, with breakouts returning after college. He characterized revisiting that experience as painful, while also recognizing it as part of his life. (TheWrap’s coverage)
The account is a personal recollection, not a medical discussion or advice about acne. The quoted wording attributed to Rush above is reproduced as TVLine reported it; the exact wording of Pine’s podcast comments should be checked against the recording if quoted verbatim.

Where the story comes from
Rush’s account was reported in coverage of the 2023 oral history Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History. Pine addressed the story in a 2024 podcast appearance. Those sources support the narrower conclusion: Pine auditioned for Ryan, Rush said Pine’s skin influenced the decision, and McKenzie ultimately played the role.
