The original cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show includes one major loss: Tim Curry, who played Dr. Frank-N-Furter, died in August 2026, according to the Associated Press. Several of his fellow cast members took part in 50th-anniversary events announced for 2025, while Peter Hinwood, who played Rocky, had largely left entertainment for the antiques business. Here’s what is established about the principal cast—and where public information stops short of a reliable current update.
Who played the main characters in The Rocky Horror Picture Show?
The 1975 film brought together performers from the original stage production and new screen cast members. Richard O’Brien created the stage musical’s book, music and lyrics; he also played Riff Raff in the film.
| Performer | Film role | Connection to the stage production |
|---|---|---|
| Tim Curry | Dr. Frank-N-Furter | Reprised his stage role |
| Susan Sarandon | Janet Weiss | New to the film cast |
| Barry Bostwick | Brad Majors | New to the film cast |
| Richard O’Brien | Riff Raff | Reprised his stage role; created the stage musical |
| Patricia Quinn | Magenta | Reprised her stage role |
| Nell “Little Nell” Campbell | Columbia | Reprised her stage role |
| Peter Hinwood | Rocky | Film cast member |
| Meat Loaf | Eddie | Film cast member |
| Jonathan Adams | Dr. Everett V. Scott | Film cast member |
| Charles Gray | The Criminologist | Film cast member |
The cast and role credits are listed by the official Rocky Horror site. The Walt Disney Archives dates the film’s debut to September 26, 1975. Its origins were on stage: the work began as a six-week workshop project at London’s Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in June 1973, and filming began in October 1974. The Archives identifies Curry, O’Brien, Quinn and Campbell as stage performers who reprised their roles, with Sarandon and Bostwick joining for the film. (Walt Disney Archives, September 25, 2025.)
Where are the cast members now?
Tim Curry (Dr. Frank-N-Furter)
Curry died at age 80 in August 2026, the Associated Press reported on August 26, citing his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz. The report noted that Curry had suffered a stroke in 2012 and returned to a live-action film role in Stream in 2024. (Associated Press.)

Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors), Nell Campbell (Columbia) and Patricia Quinn (Magenta)
The official Rocky Horror fan site announced in April 2025 that Bostwick, Campbell and Quinn would participate in a North American screening tour marking the film’s 50th anniversary. The announcement said the planned tour would visit more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada, with costume contests, meet-and-greets, local shadow casts and a traveling museum in selected cities. It documents the 2025 plans, not events currently available to attend. (Official tour announcement, April 28, 2025.)
Bostwick described the film’s legacy in that announcement: “Rocky has changed lives, not just ours, and had a profound effect on how we accept our differences in this world.”

Peter Hinwood (Rocky)
Hinwood left entertainment shortly after the film to pursue antiques, according to Playbill. The publication reported that he planned a rare public appearance at a London anniversary event in April 2025. That event notice does not establish his current residence, health or present work. (Playbill, 2025.)
Susan Sarandon (Janet Weiss) and Richard O’Brien (Riff Raff)
The available sources confirm their roles in the film and, in O’Brien’s case, his authorship of the original stage musical. They do not provide a sufficiently current, well-supported account of either performer’s career as of October 2026, so a more specific present-day update cannot be verified here.

The anniversary fell in 2025, half a century after the Walt Disney Archives’ September 26, 1975 debut date. The Archives describes director Jim Sharman’s film as one that “treads a thin line between homage and parody… [the film] has its own story and can hold its own whether you are a horror fan or not.” The line between screen story and audience ritual is part of the film’s enduring identity: anniversary events continued the tradition of screenings where fans dress up and participate.
