Spoilers for the entire 2023 film. Eileen fires the shot that kills Lee Polk’s mother, then leaves town. Her departure offers a way out of the bleak life she has been trapped in, but the film does not present it as a clean victory or a settled romance. The escape is bound to violence, and Eileen’s final expression leaves room for both release and shock.
How the climax leads to Eileen’s departure
Eileen Dunlop works as a secretary at a Massachusetts prison in the 1960s and lives with her abusive, alcoholic father. Her days are isolated and constricted. Rebecca Saint John, a glamorous counselor at the prison, becomes the focus of Eileen’s fascination and her imagined route to another life. The film’s premise is summarized by NEON’s official film page, while the Associated Press’s Sundance report places the film within its psychologically extreme, genre-bending story.
That fantasy takes a dangerous turn when Rebecca draws Eileen into a plan involving Lee Polk’s family. The crime is the hinge of the ending: Eileen stops being a spectator to the life she imagines and becomes an active participant in a violent act. Once she has fired the gun, she cannot return to the untouched, powerless position she occupied earlier in the story.
Why Eileen is the one who fires the gun
The film changes a decisive moment from Ottessa Moshfegh’s source novel. In the novel, Rebecca accidentally fires the weapon; in William Oldroyd’s film, Eileen does it. Oldroyd’s explanation of that adaptation choice was reported by Entertainment Weekly, carried by Yahoo.

The change gives Eileen more agency, but it also makes her culpability harder to evade. Her departure is not simply an escape arranged by Rebecca: Eileen has crossed a moral boundary herself. That combination makes the ending more unsettling than a straightforward rescue or romantic payoff.
What the final scene means
Escape through self-invention
A grounded reading is that Eileen finally acts on her desire to become someone other than the daughter and prison secretary her old life has made her. Leaving town turns a private fantasy of escape into a concrete choice. But the route out is inseparable from the violence that made it possible.

Freedom mixed with shock
The film does not give Eileen’s final look one definitive meaning. It can suggest relief at having left, shock at what she has done, or both at once. The open quality matters: the ending shows a departure, not a completed account of how Eileen understands herself afterward. The published ending analysis likewise treats the final image as unresolved rather than a coded answer.
Not a confirmed romantic escape
Rebecca’s attention helps catalyze Eileen’s break from her old life, but the ending does not establish that the two women leave together or settle into a shared future. It leaves the relationship’s emotional meaning unsettled; reading Eileen’s departure as a tidy romantic resolution goes beyond what the film confirms.
