His story begins in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where his childhood friend Rika becomes a curse and draws him into the world of jujutsu sorcery. He later joins the main series, including the Culling Game storyline.
Who is Yuta Okkotsu?
Yuta is a central character whose introduction comes in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel manga by Gege Akutami. The official anime character profile identifies him as a second-year at Tokyo Jujutsu High and a special-grade sorcerer. [Official character profile]
His place in the story is shaped first by Rika, then by his relationships and responsibilities in the wider jujutsu world. He is not simply a character who appears briefly in the prequel: the official profile also places him in the main-series conflict involving Yuji Itadori.
What happened to Yuta and Rika?
Rika was Yuta’s childhood friend. After she became a special-grade vengeful cursed spirit, Yuta was burdened by the curse and transferred to Jujutsu High. Satoru Gojo recognized the situation and brought him into the school, where he could learn how to confront curses.

The official profile says he succeeds in releasing Rika after a fierce battle with Suguru Geto during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. That is the outcome of Jujutsu Kaisen 0; it is not a description of every later development in Yuta’s story. [Official character profile]
Is Yuta a special-grade sorcerer?
Yes. The official anime character page identifies Yuta as a special-grade sorcerer. A March 19, 2026 anime announcement promoting his appearance in episode 59, “Sendai Colony,” describes him as having returned to special-grade status three months after the Night Parade and calls him a modern prodigy second only to Gojo. Those are the announcement’s descriptions in that dated anime context, not a universal ranking for every point in the manga. [Official anime announcement]

Where should you start reading Yuta’s story?
Choose based on whether you want Yuta’s origin or the broader serialized plot:
| Starting point | Best for | Format and context |
|---|---|---|
| Jujutsu Kaisen 0 | Readers who want Yuta’s origin and his story with Rika | VIZ lists the prequel as a paperback and digital edition. Its paperback listing gives ISBN 978-1-9747-2014-9; current availability and purchase details can change. [VIZ paperback listing] |
| Main-series chapters | Readers following the broader serialized plot | VIZ lists prequel chapters 0.1–0.4 separately from the numbered main-series chapters. Digital access may vary by territory. [VIZ chapter listing] |
For the most direct route into Yuta’s character, begin with Jujutsu Kaisen 0. If you are reading the main series in publication order or want to follow its broader plot, use the numbered chapters and treat the prequel as a distinct section.

How much of Yuta’s story is covered here?
The official sources cited here establish his prequel premise, the outcome of his conflict with Geto, his later executioner assignment, and a dated anime description of his Culling Game role. They do not establish every later manga event or provide a complete account of his final manga outcome. The manga concluded in September 2024, but finale details should be checked against the completed chapters rather than inferred from anime profiles or promotional material.
