Fred C. Trump III says his uncle, Donald Trump, told him that he should “just let” his disabled son William die and move to Florida. The allegation comes from Fred’s own account in a July 24, 2024, TIME excerpt from his memoir; it is not independently established by a recording or other direct corroboration in the reviewed reporting.
What Fred Trump III says happened
Fred Trump III, the son of Donald Trump’s late older brother Fred Trump Jr., recounts two conversations in 2020. He describes one remark during a discussion at the White House and a separate later phone call about his son William. The accounts and quotations below are Fred’s, as published in his memoir excerpt by TIME on July 24, 2024; The Guardian also reported the episodes.
The Oval Office discussion
Fred says he attended a May 2020 White House discussion with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir, and disability advocates. They discussed support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including care and medical needs. Fred recounts Trump making a separate comment during that discussion: “The shape they’re in, all the expenses, maybe those kinds of people should just die.”
The later phone call
Fred says he subsequently spoke with Trump about William and financial help. In Fred’s account, Trump said: “He doesn’t recognize you. Maybe you should just let him die and move down to Florida.” This phone call is distinct from the Oval Office discussion; the officials at that meeting are not described as witnesses to it.

What Donald Trump said in response
The Washington Post reported on July 30, 2024, that Trump said he had helped Fred and contributed to a fund for William. The Post quoted him as saying: “I helped him so much, more than anyone else in his life, and this is the thanks I get. I even set up [a] meeting with NIH and top doctors in the country talking about his son, who is disabled,” The newspaper said Trump and his spokesperson did not directly answer its question about the specific remarks Fred described. Separately, TIME’s editor’s note said the outlet requested Trump’s response to the events and received no reply. Neither account constitutes a direct denial of the quoted remarks. What is known about William
Fred’s TIME essay says William was born in 1999, experienced infantile spasms, and was diagnosed at age 15 with a KCNQ2 mutation. According to Fred, as reported by the Post, William was living in a group home and doing relatively well medically in 2024. These are details about William as reported by his father, not general claims about people with disabilities.

- The reviewed reporting does not independently verify the private conversations. It provides no recording or other direct corroboration.
- Trump’s reported response addresses his assistance to Fred and William. The Post said it did not directly answer the question about the specific disability-related remarks.
