The films do not reveal Beetlejuice’s human life or explain how he died. They identify him as a demon from the Netherworld and a “bio-exorcist,” then show his work among the living and his schemes in the Afterlife. The 2024 sequel adds relationships and circumstances there, but not a complete mortal origin.
What was Beetlejuice before he became a demon?
The films do not establish that Beetlejuice was ever human. They provide no birth name, earthly occupation, family, human home or account of a transformation from person into demon. A National Theatre study guide for the stage musical describes him as a “demon of the Netherworld” and a “bio-exorcist”; those labels describe his role, not a former human identity. How did Beetlejuice die?
No cause or date of death is established in the film material covered here. The story does not offer a human death scene or explain how Beetlejuice became a Netherworld demon, so claims about a specific mortal identity or demise should not be treated as film canon.
What does the 1988 film establish about his afterlife?
Beetlejuice’s clearest role is that of a “bio-exorcist”: he helps the dead haunt the living. In the original film, recently deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland want the Deetz family out of their former home and enlist him to scare them. Lydia Deetz’s repetition of his name releases him to cause trouble. What does the 2024 sequel add?
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice develops his Afterlife story rather than supplying a human biography. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis says an unexpected family tragedy brings three generations of the Deetz family back to Winter River. Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, discovers the town model and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife; Beetlejuice returns after his name is said three times. The synopsis credits the screenplay to Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with a story by Gough, Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, based on characters created by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson. His return and plan involving Lydia
A September 6, 2024, TIME recap describes Beetlejuice as having bided his time in the Netherworld since the first film. It says he schemes to get back to the living world through a marriage pact with Lydia, and that the Maitlands have moved on to another plane. Delores, his ex-wife
The sequel introduces Delores, whom TIME describes as Beetlejuice’s ex-wife and a soul-sucking demon. This gives him an additional Afterlife relationship; it does not explain whether he ever lived as a human or how he died. TIME’s sequel recap

- When or how he died, if he had a mortal life at all.
- How or when he became a Netherworld demon.
Those gaps are not filled by the film details described above. The stage musical is a separate version: its characterization should not be folded into film canon without a clear distinction between adaptations.
