Neil Young and Crazy Horse opened their April 24, 2024, Love Earth Tour concert in San Diego with “Cortez the Killer,” including a verse missing from the familiar recording on 1975’s Zuma. Young had recently rediscovered the lyrics and worked out where they belonged in the song, according to contemporaneous reporting.
What happened at the tour launch
Young and Crazy Horse began the show at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre with an extended performance of “Cortez the Killer.” Near the end, Young sang words that were not included in the released Zuma recording. Rolling Stone Canada described a strong audience reaction; the reports identify the passage as the song’s missing verse. (Rolling Stone Canada; Exclaim!)
The April 24 performance was the Love Earth Tour’s opening night, not a later archival release. The touring lineup included drummer Ralph Molina, bassist Billy Talbot, and guitarist Micah Nelson, who was playing in place of Nils Lofgren. (Exclaim!)
Why the verse was absent from the Zuma recording
In an account reported by Rolling Stone Canada before the tour, Young recalled that the recording console lost power during the original session near Zuma Beach. The band kept playing without realizing the interruption. After power returned, producer David Briggs resumed recording, and the edit left out a verse. This is Young’s recollection as reported in the article, not a separately documented studio-session record. (Rolling Stone Canada)

Young said he had found the lyrics shortly before the tour and was trying to determine where the verse fit. When Briggs told the band that a verse had been missed, Young reportedly replied, “I never liked that one anyway.” (Rolling Stone Canada)
How to distinguish the debut from earlier live recordings
The newly heard verse at the San Diego show was part of a 2024 tour performance. It should not be confused with earlier archival live versions: the official Neil Young Archives Vol. III store listing includes two previously unreleased 1976 live versions of “Cortez the Killer,” but does not say that they contain the recovered verse or document the 2024 performance.
