Galentine’s Day is a celebration of friendship, especially female friendship, commonly observed on February 13—the day before Valentine’s Day. It began as a fictional tradition in Parks and Recreation and has since inspired everything from coffee with friends to parties and creative classes. There is no required way or date to celebrate.
When is Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is most closely associated with February 13. The date comes from Leslie Knope’s tradition in Parks and Recreation, but it is not a formal rule: the Associated Press notes that friends can mark the occasion on February 13 or choose another day that works for them.
How did Galentine’s Day start?
The observance originated in the Season 2 episode “Galentine’s Day” of Parks and Recreation, identified by the Los Angeles Times as Season 2, Episode 16. The show’s creators used Leslie’s enthusiasm for holidays to make space for a celebration centered on friendship.
In a 2019 oral history for LAist, co-creator Mike Schur said the show was pitched as a story about female friendship. He described Galentine’s Day as fitting Leslie’s love of celebrations while giving those friendships their own occasion. Schur summed up its spirit as “ladies celebrating ladies.”

Amy Poehler, who played Leslie, described the idea as a way to subvert Valentine’s Day expectations and recognize that women’s friendships can be among the most enduring loves in someone’s life. Those comments explain the show’s intent, not eligibility rules: people can celebrate friends of any gender.
What happens in the original episode?
Leslie’s fictional tradition is a February 13 breakfast with her friends, along with thoughtful, personalized gifts. Examples include handmade flower pens and personal notes about what makes each friend special. As Leslie puts it in the episode, “Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it breakfast-style.”

The breakfast and gifts are part of the character’s tradition, not a checklist for everyone else. The idea that carries over is taking time to appreciate friends in a personal way.

Choose an activity to suit the people involved rather than treating the occasion as something that requires a big event or shopping. A meal or a simple get-together can leave room for conversation; a shared class or outing gives the group something to do together. A personal note or thoughtful, individualized gesture echoes the episode without needing to reproduce its gifts.
