Who were the best-dressed stars at the 2024 Met Gala? These 21 looks stand out for the way they interpreted the night’s theme and dress code through archival fashion, natural motifs, sculptural shapes and precise tailoring. This is an editorial selection, not an official award or definitive ranking: the Met did not name a best-dressed winner, and Vogue’s retrospective gallery invited readers to vote.
What the 2024 Met Gala theme and dress code meant
The gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2024. Its theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” was the title of the Costume Institute exhibition; the dress code for the evening was “The Garden of Time.” The two ideas were connected, but they were not interchangeable.
The exhibition considered fashion’s relationship with the natural world and the vulnerability of historic garments, organizing its subthemes around Land, Sea and Sky. The dress code took its name from J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, not simply from the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Vogue’s explanation points to the story’s concerns with fleeting beauty, nature, time, fragility and decay as cues for interpreting the code. That distinction helps explain why the strongest looks were not all literal bouquets. Some drew on historical fashion, some translated nature into sculptural forms, and others used tailoring to create a quieter interpretation. Why these looks stand out together
The range is the point: an archival Givenchy piece can evoke fashion’s past, a three-dimensional floral gown can make a garden architectural, and a tailored menswear look can respond to the dress code through polish and silhouette. Vogue’s account of the evening also calls attention to variety beyond florals, naming Josh O’Connor in Loewe, Morgan Spector in Willy Chavarria and Stefon Diggs in H&M as contemporary menswear examples.
The exhibition itself put fragility and fashion’s relationship with nature at its center. In an Associated Press report on the event, Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton was described as “looking for a way to literally breathe life into a collection of 33,000 pieces.” The AP reported that about 250 objects were selected for the exhibition. Those figures describe the exhibition as reported in 2024, not an updated count. The Associated Press report also said the gala had raised more than $223.5 million to date at that time; that is a 2024 figure, not a current fundraising total.

The public exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” ran at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 10 through September 2, 2024. The gala preceded the public run, taking place on May 6.
