At a May 25, 2024, event at The Cabot in Beverly, Massachusetts, Richard Dreyfuss’s Q&A before a Jaws screening drew objections and walkouts. The venue apologized two days later, saying the remarks did not reflect its values of inclusivity and respect and accepting responsibility for failing to anticipate the conversation’s direction.
What happened at The Cabot’s Jaws event?
The Cabot, a theater in Beverly, Massachusetts, advertised the May 25, 2024, program as “An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening.” Dreyfuss, who played marine biologist Matt Hooper in the 1975 film, appeared for a Q&A before the movie. The Associated Press reported on the event and its aftermath on May 28, 2024 (Associated Press).
Contemporary reports described remarks during the Q&A concerning women in film and #MeToo, transgender youth and LGBTQ+ rights, and the Academy’s inclusion efforts. Audience members objected, and some left before the screening. Because no full transcript had been released when The Guardian reported on May 28, 2024, descriptions of what was said should be understood as attributed reporting, not a transcript-certified account (The Guardian).
Why did The Cabot apologize?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press, The Cabot said: “We deeply regret that Mr. Dreyfuss’s comments during the event were not in line with the values of inclusivity and respect that we uphold at The Cabot. We understand that his remarks were distressing and offensive to many of our community members, and for that, we sincerely apologize.”

The Guardian quoted a further part of the venue’s statement: “We regret that an event that was meant to be a conversation to celebrate an iconic movie instead became a platform for political views.” The Cabot added: “We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for the discomfort it caused to many patrons.” The statement was issued May 27, 2024.
That explanation framed the apology around both the impact on patrons and the venue’s handling of the event: The Cabot said it should have anticipated how the Q&A might develop, rather than allowing a program intended to celebrate the film to become a forum for political views.

How many people walked out?
Casey Soward, The Cabot’s executive director, estimated to The Boston Globe that 125 people left before the movie began. The paper reported that the event was sold out and that the theater had a capacity of 850; those figures were attributed to Soward and the report, not to an independently audited count (The Boston Globe).
Soward told the Globe that some attendees expected a screening and anecdotes about the film, rather than contentious political remarks. The paper also reported his recollection that a comment about a child identifying as an octopus triggered the first wave of walkouts. That detail is Soward’s recollection as reported by the Globe, not a verified transcript.

What is known about Dreyfuss’s response?
The contemporaneous reports cited here do not establish that Richard Dreyfuss personally apologized or issued a response to the incident. The Associated Press reported that a representative for Dreyfuss could not be reached at publication.
ABC News reported comments from Dreyfuss’s son, Ben Dreyfuss, who had not attended the event. He said, “I was not in a position to judge what he said.” ABC also reported Ben’s view that the interviewer should not have raised contentious subjects and that the audience had wanted stories about Jaws. That was the son’s perspective, not a statement from Richard Dreyfuss (ABC News).
