Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man introduced Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in 2002. The film’s six principal cast members—Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, James Franco, Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris—went on to very different careers. Here’s what each did after the first film, from major screen roles to a return to the franchise.
Who played whom in Spider-Man (2002)?
Sony describes Spider-Man as the first film in Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Peter Parker’s origin story. Maguire played Peter Parker and Spider-Man; Dunst was Mary Jane Watson; Dafoe was Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin; Franco played Harry Osborn; Robertson was Uncle Ben; and Harris was Aunt May. J.K. Simmons also appeared as J. Jonah Jameson. Sony Pictures’ film page and FAQ identify the film, director and roles.
Where is the Spider-Man cast now?
Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man
Maguire became the face of Raimi’s trilogy, then took on roles beyond the superhero franchise. His later films include Seabiscuit (2003), The Good German (2006), The Great Gatsby (2013) and Pawn Sacrifice (2014). He also worked as a producer. After a more sporadic stretch of acting work, he returned as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and appeared in Babylon (2022). The career highlights and recent credits are reported in a May 3, 2026, retrospective by AOL and Entertainment Weekly; Biography.com’s Maguire profile, updated in 2021, also covers several of his earlier post-trilogy roles.
Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson
Dunst followed the Spider-Man trilogy with a wide range of work, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Marie Antoinette, Melancholia, Hidden Figures, The Beguiled and The Power of the Dog. The 2026 retrospective says The Power of the Dog brought her first Academy Award nomination. It also lists Civil War (2024) and Roofman (2025) among her later films.

Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin
Dafoe continued moving between independent films and studio productions, working with filmmakers including Wes Anderson and Robert Eggers. His later credits include The Florida Project (2017), At Eternity’s Gate (2018), John Wick, Aquaman, Poor Things and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The retrospective notes that The Florida Project and At Eternity’s Gate earned him Academy Award nominations. He also returned as Green Goblin in No Way Home (2021). Reflecting on his original dual role, Dafoe said in a 2019 GQ interview, as quoted by the retrospective: “Everybody thinks about the Green Goblin, and that was fun, but the more interesting role was probably the father.”
James Franco as Harry Osborn
After the trilogy, Franco appeared in films including Pineapple Express, Milk and 127 Hours. He expanded into directing and producing, then directed and starred in The Disaster Artist (2017), for which the retrospective says he won a Golden Globe. The same 2026 account characterizes his career as having slowed after sexual-misconduct allegations; that description is the retrospective’s assessment, not a finding about the allegations.
