He received a 50-month prison sentence, a $500,000 fine and five years of supervised release. His conviction and sentence were appealed, but the sources available here do not establish whether the Second Circuit issued a later decision after hearing arguments on April 9, 2026. His civil cases have separate outcomes: some claims were dismissed on legal grounds, and those rulings are not findings that the allegations were true or false.
What was Combs convicted of?
On July 2, 2025, a federal jury found Combs guilty on two counts of transporting people to engage in prostitution under the Mann Act. It found him not guilty of racketeering conspiracy and the sex-trafficking counts. Those are distinct verdicts: he was convicted of the transportation offenses, not the charges on which the jury acquitted him.
On October 3, 2025, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced him to 50 months in prison, a $500,000 fine and five years of supervised release. At sentencing, Subramanian said: “Mr. Combs, you’re being sentenced for the offenses of conviction, NOT the crimes he was acquitted of.”
Is the criminal appeal over?
The conviction and sentence were appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The panel heard oral argument on April 9, 2026, and reserved its decision rather than ruling at the hearing. The appellate docket listing available for this account was last retrieved that day; it does not establish whether the court issued an opinion or mandate afterward. As a result, the later status of the appeal cannot be confirmed here, and it should not be described as either concluded or still pending without checking the current Second Circuit docket.

What is being challenged?
The defense challenges both the conviction and the sentence. A central sentencing issue is how the judge applied U.S.S.G. §1B1.3(c), a guideline provision added by Sentencing Commission Amendment 826 and effective November 1, 2024. It addresses when conduct underlying an acquitted charge may be considered in calculating a guideline range, including an exception for conduct that also establishes an offense of conviction. The defense and government offered different readings of that exception.
At argument, judges questioned the sentence’s severity and the role of acquitted conduct. Circuit Judge William J. Nardini called it “an ‘exceptionally difficult case’ that raises questions of first impression ‘not only for this court but for any federal court in the country.’” Those questions and comments are not a ruling or a prediction of the result.

What has happened in the civil cases?
There is no single status for all civil lawsuits involving Combs. The cases below involve different parties and procedural decisions. A dismissal based on a filing deadline or a pleading defect does not decide whether the alleged conduct happened.
| Case | Ruling reported | What the ruling means |
|---|---|---|
| Julian Sapp v. Combs | On September 18, 2026, the court dismissed Counts II through XV as untimely. It also dismissed Count XII for failure to plead the required elements of a California privacy claim. The court declined supplemental jurisdiction over Count I, which it dismissed without prejudice. | The decision rests on limitations and pleading grounds, and the jurisdictional dismissal leaves open the possibility of a separate filing where permitted. It is not a finding that the allegations were true or false. |
| Dawn Richard’s case | The Associated Press reported on June 15, 2026, that most of Richard’s claims were dismissed because they were not filed within the applicable time period. One allegation could be refiled in state court. | The reported ruling concerned filing deadlines, not the judge’s view of whether the alleged conduct occurred. |
| Combs v. Burgess | In an order dated September 4, 2026, the court granted Nexstar Media’s motion to dismiss in part and denied Ariel Mitchell’s motion to dismiss. The court also directed the parties to confer and submit a status letter. | This is a lawsuit Combs brought against Courtney Burgess, Ariel Mitchell and Nexstar Media. It is not an abuse lawsuit against Combs. |
What should readers watch for next?
The Second Circuit’s docket and any opinion
The key unresolved point in the available appellate record is whether the Second Circuit acted after the April 9, 2026, argument. A later opinion could address the conviction, the sentence, or both. Oral-argument questions alone do not answer those questions.

Updates in each civil case
Further filings or proceedings must be tracked case by case. A dismissal without prejudice, a possible state-court refiling, and a partial dismissal in a separate suit are different procedural outcomes; none supplies a reliable overall count or status for all civil claims against Combs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no reliable single lawsuit count here
The sources available do not establish a comprehensive, consistently defined current total of civil suits. Cases may differ in parties, claims, courts and procedural stage, so an unsourced aggregate number would obscure more than it explains. The case-specific rulings and their legal grounds are more informative.
