How to choose a festival and plan the visit
Start with the experience you want, then match it to an event that is actually open on your travel dates. A parade-centered Oktoberfest, apple-themed street festival, farm weekend, and multi-week pumpkin attraction are very different outings.
- For German food and parades: La Crosse and Peoria are 2026 examples, but their September schedules have ended. Crown Point’s October 3 date has also passed.
- For apple treats: Nebraska City’s AppleJack weekends are over; Lincoln Square Apple Fest ends October 4.
- For a later-October family visit: the listed date ranges for Lincoln Park Zoo Fall Fest, Jack’s Pumpkin Pop-Up, and Johnson Farm Pumpkin Fest extend beyond October 4.
- For crafts and music: Shipshewana’s fair and Milwaukee’s Harbor Fest have passed; use their listings to check for future schedules rather than assuming dates recur unchanged.
Before setting out, verify the organizer’s current date and daily hours, admission and separate activity costs, age policies, parking or transit, accessibility, and weather arrangements. The listings do not establish comparable answers for every event. Admission rules are event-specific: for example, the zoo event is described as free and family-friendly, while Peoria’s child-admission rule applied to its completed 2026 festival.
