Some viewers and scholars have read Disney princesses’ behavior as resembling mental-illness symptoms, but no canonical diagnoses are established for the characters. A 2021 honors thesis examined Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Anna, and Elsa and concluded that each could be diagnosed; its public abstract does not identify the diagnoses or provide the individual case reasoning. That is one author’s interpretation of fictional portrayals—not a clinical assessment or a Disney statement.
Which Disney princesses have been discussed in this context?
Hannah Tanner’s 2021 Eastern Kentucky University honors thesis, Diagnosing a Princess: How Portrayals of Mental Illness in Disney Princesses May Influence Children, focuses on five characters:
- Snow White
- Cinderella
- Aurora
- Anna
- Elsa
The thesis abstract says Tanner concluded that all five could be diagnosed with a mental disorder. It does not name the proposed disorders or explain how the author reached a character-by-character conclusion. Without that detail, it would be misleading to assign particular diagnoses to these five on the thesis’s authority.
What mental illness does Elsa have?
There is no established official diagnosis for Elsa. An editorial overview of fan interpretations describes viewers associating her with anxiety or depression, Anna with ADHD traits, and Belle with social anxiety. These are unofficial readings, not clinical findings or confirmation of authorial intent. A character can be discussed as resembling a symptom pattern without being said to have a disorder.

What the broader Disney-film research found
A 2004 study by Andrea Lawson and Gregory Fouts examined verbal references to mental illness in 34 Disney animated feature films. It reported that 85% of those films contained such references, with an average of 4.6 references per film. Those numbers describe coded verbal references in the study’s sample—not the share of princesses with mental illness, and not an estimate of the effect on children.
The authors reported that references mainly served to distinguish or denigrate the characters they described. This is a finding about the films and coding method studied, not a claim about every Disney film, every character, or how every viewer responds.

How to tell portrayal, interpretation, and diagnosis apart
These three categories are easy to blur, but they are not interchangeable:
- Portrayal: What the story explicitly shows or says about a character.
- Interpretation: A viewer or author reads a behavior as resembling a symptom or pattern.
- Clinical diagnosis: A conclusion based on an appropriate assessment and relevant history. A scripted fictional story does not provide a person’s documented clinical history.
For any proposed character link, useful questions include what behavior is actually shown, what context the story gives for it, who is making the comparison, and what evidence is absent. A dramatic scene or a trait that resembles a symptom does not, by itself, establish a disorder.

What the discussion can—and cannot—say about children
Tanner’s thesis concerns portrayals and their possible influence, while Lawson and Fouts studied verbal references in films. Neither finding, as summarized in the cited material, establishes that a particular child will interpret a character in a particular way or develop a mental-health condition from watching a film.
In a 2004 Psychology Today summary of the Lawson and Fouts study, Lawson said, “it’s important that parents are critical of what their kids watch.” The article also reports her suggestion that parents can ask children how they feel about negative stereotypes, encouraging them to think critically about what they see.
