Empress Eugénie’s crown was also taken during the incident, but it was abandoned at the scene and recovered; it is not one of the eight missing pieces. The Louvre estimated the loss at €88 million.
List of jewelry stolen from the Louvre
The Louvre’s October 19, 2025 statement names seven stolen objects or groups. The eighth—the brooch belonging to Empress Eugénie—is identified in the Associated Press’s list attributed to France’s Culture Ministry.
| Stolen piece | Historical association |
|---|---|
| Sapphire diadem | Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense |
| Sapphire necklace | Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense |
| One sapphire earring | Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense |
| Emerald necklace | Marie-Louise |
| Pair of emerald earrings | Marie-Louise |
| Reliquary Brooch | Named as a separate stolen object by the Louvre |
| Diadem, also described in English reports as a tiara | Empress Eugénie |
| Brooch | Empress Eugénie; identified as the eighth object in the Associated Press list attributed to the French Culture Ministry |
The Louvre’s list uses the French term diadème for Eugénie’s headpiece. That stolen diadem or tiara should not be confused with her crown, which was recovered. [Louvre, October 19, 2025; Associated Press]
Which Louvre jewels were recovered?
Eugénie’s crown was recovered at the scene after being left behind during the thieves’ escape. The Louvre said its condition was being examined. The museum separately counted eight objects as stolen; INTERPOL likewise described eight other items as missing and entered them in its Stolen Works of Art database. How much were the stolen jewels worth?
On October 21, 2025, the Louvre estimated the loss at €88 million. This is the museum’s monetary estimate, not a measure of the jewels’ historical or heritage significance, which the Louvre described as inestimable. Le Monde later reported that the eight pieces contained more than 8,700 precious stones and cited the €88 million estimate. [Louvre, October 21, 2025; Le Monde]
What happened after the theft?
The Louvre said two high-security display cases in the Galerie d’Apollon were targeted, alarms sounded, and an investigation was opened under the Paris prosecutor’s authority. In July 2026, the gallery reopened to visitors without the stolen jewels on display. [Louvre, October 19, 2025; Le Monde, July 2026]

Le Monde reported in July 2026 that two main suspects had been arrested about a week after the theft, charged, and later questioned by investigating judges. The report distinguished statements it described as corroborated from others it characterized as disjointed or outlandish; those accounts are allegations and should not be treated as established facts. The Louvre said it would not comment beyond its published information on the judicial investigation. [Le Monde, July 2026; Louvre, October 21, 2025]
