Spoilers for Foundation Season 3, Episode 10, “The Darkness.” Gaal defeats the person she believes is the Mule, but Bayta Mallow reveals that she is the real Mule. Elsewhere, Brother Dusk destroys the Cleon cloning operation, Demerzel is destroyed protecting a Cleon embryo, and Dusk kills Brother Day. The season ends with Dusk on the throne, the dynasty shattered, and a robot signal reaching the Moon.
Does the Mule win in Foundation season 3?
Not completely—but Gaal’s apparent victory is overturned. She overpowers and kills the person she believes to be the Mule. Bayta Mallow then identifies herself as the real Mule and tries to recruit Gaal, promising to achieve in a short time what psychohistory would take centuries to bring about.
The exchange leaves Gaal with a choice between concentrated power and speed, offered by Bayta, and the slower collective plan associated with psychohistory. That contrast is an interpretation of the characters’ stated choices; the finale does not establish what Gaal will decide or what happens next.
Who is the real Mule?
In the television series’ Season 3 finale, Bayta Mallow claims the Mule identity after Gaal kills the apparent Mule. The show’s reveal differs from the cited account of Isaac Asimov’s books: there, Magnifico is the Mule, and Bayta is the first person to work it out. The TV series has made its own choice here, so the novels’ later events should not be treated as a guide to what the show will do.

Apple lists “The Darkness” as the Season 3 finale and describes Gaal and the Second Foundation taking the fight to the Mule while Empire suffers a catastrophic blow. See Apple’s official series and episode information.
Why does Empire fall?
The imperial storyline ends in the destruction of both a dynasty and its remaining family ties. Dusk destroys the Cleon cloning operation. Demerzel protects a Cleon embryo and is destroyed in the process. Day, who had tried to help her escape her programming, is then killed by Dusk. Dusk takes Seldon’s psychohistory crystal and occupies the throne.

Demerzel’s end is especially tragic because the possibility of freedom appears within reach just before she is destroyed. The finale shows her destruction, but does not establish that she can never return or be recovered. David S. Goyer told TheWrap that he wanted Empire’s fall to happen in this season. What does the Moon reveal mean?
After Day’s robot skull connects with another robot on the Moon near Earth, the series points beyond the immediate fight between the Foundations and Empire. Goyer told TheWrap that, in the books, some robots have remained hidden on the Moon since the Robot Wars, waiting to make themselves known. He said he moved the reveal forward because it fit the fall of Empire: “I decided that with the robots, it was time to pull events forward, and the fall of Empire felt like a good reason to pull them forward.”

The scene suggests a much older history and the possible return of robot agency. It does not reveal the Moon robots’ next move, their allegiance, or a specific plan.
How does the ending set up the next season?
The finale resolves immediate events but leaves their consequences open: Bayta has revealed herself as the Mule, Empire’s dynastic continuity is broken, and the robot signal has reached the Moon. The episode does not settle whether Bayta is the only or final Mule, what the Moon robots intend, or how Empire’s collapse will affect the Foundations.

Goyer described Season 4 as a direct continuation of Season 3: “Season 4 would be a direct continuation of Season 3.” That is his stated design for the story, not an explanation of the unresolved events themselves.

The key difference established in the finale is the Mule reveal: Bayta claims the identity in the series, whereas the cited comparison identifies Magnifico as the Mule in the books and Bayta as the one who discovers it. For the original Mule storyline, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation and Empire is an optional starting point. Read it as the source material, not as a prediction of the television series’ next plot turns.
