Jane’s Addiction apologized after an onstage altercation ended its September 13, 2024, performance in Boston early, then canceled its scheduled September 15 show in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Bridgeport cancellation was announced first; the band canceled the rest of its 2024 tour the following day.
What happened at Jane’s Addiction’s Boston concert?
On Friday, September 13, 2024, Jane’s Addiction was performing at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston when frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro became involved in an onstage altercation. Contemporary video reporting described Farrell shoving Navarro and appearing to swing at him. Crew members intervened, and the performance ended abruptly. The Independent’s report and The Guardian’s coverage documented the incident.
Why did Jane’s Addiction cancel Sunday’s show?
On Sunday, September 15, the band apologized to fans for what had happened in Boston and announced that its scheduled Bridgeport, Connecticut, show would not go ahead. The apology, reported by The Independent, said: “We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night.”
The band’s notice said refunds would be issued at the point of purchase. Fans who bought tickets through a third-party resale service were directed to contact that service. This was a cancellation of the Bridgeport performance, not the Boston show, which had already taken place and ended early.

Did the band cancel the rest of its tour?
Yes. On Monday, September 16, Jane’s Addiction announced that it would take time away as a group and cancel the remaining tour dates. That was a separate, broader decision announced after the Bridgeport cancellation. Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins cited concerns about Farrell’s behavior, safety on stage and whether the band could perform reliably. In a statement reported by The Guardian, the three said: “We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”
What did Perry Farrell say afterward?
Farrell issued an individual apology on September 16, distinct from the band’s apology to fans. He apologized to his bandmates, especially Navarro, as well as fans, family and friends, and accepted responsibility for his conduct. The Independent reported his statement: “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

In the days after the Boston show, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, attributed the tension to stage volume, saying he felt his voice was being drowned out. That was her explanation, not an independently established account of the cause.

Competing legal claims in 2025
In 2025, the band members became involved in competing legal actions that offered sharply conflicting allegations about responsibility, the stage conflict and the tour’s cancellation. The Associated Press reported on the dispute, but its account described allegations in the filings rather than a final court finding. Claims about backstage events or the reasons for the conflict should therefore be understood as attributed claims, not settled facts. The Associated Press report covers the litigation.
