CM Punk and AJ Lee’s televised romance came first, but it was a WWE storyline—not the start of their private relationship. AJ Lee later said they began dating around two years after that storyline, after first becoming friends and deciding to try dating when both were single. They married in 2014.
Their WWE romance was scripted
In 2012, WWE placed AJ Lee in a series of fictional romantic storylines. One involved CM Punk: WWE’s retrospective recounts Lee kissing Punk while she was also entangled on-screen with Daniel Bryan, then putting Punk through a table. Those scenes explain why viewers associated the pair, but they do not establish when they began a real relationship. WWE’s retrospective of Lee’s on-screen romantic entanglements treats the events as part of her televised character story.
Friendship and timing came before dating
In an interview with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon, Lee described a different path off camera. She said Punk had been respectful and supportive toward her at WWE, and that they were friends before they dated. They had each been seeing other people; when both were single, they decided to give dating a try.
Lee summarized the timing as, “We dated probably two years after our storyline.” That is her approximate recollection, not a precise start date. WrestleZone transcribed the remark from the interview; its account of Lee’s relationship timeline is the source for the quotation.

The on-screen first kiss was not their private beginning
Lee also recalled that her first kiss with Punk happened on WWE television, followed by her putting him through a table. She was describing the scripted scene, not a private first date. The distinction matters: their televised kiss took place in 2012, while Lee says the real dating began later, after friendship and a change in their circumstances.
They married in 2014
Lee recalled that marriage followed soon after they began dating, saying it happened “in two months or something like that.” Her wording is approximate, so it should not be treated as an exact calculation. Coverage identifies their marriage as taking place in 2014, and WWE’s current CM Punk biography identifies Lee as his wife. The available sources support the year, but not a specific wedding date.
