Start with four songs that show why Willie Nelson matters as both a songwriter and a recording artist: “Crazy,” “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Hello Walls” and “Always on My Mind.” The first three are Nelson compositions made famous by other singers; the fourth is a hit recording by Nelson himself. This is a guided starter set, not a definitive ranking.
Four essential songs—and who made them famous
Nelson’s songwriting reputation and his recording catalogue overlap, but they are not the same thing. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum identifies “Crazy,” “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Hello Walls” as among his best-known early-1960s compositions, while noting the performers who first carried those songs to hit status.

For the first three, listen with the distinction in mind: Nelson wrote the songs, but the cited hit performers were Cline, Walker and Young. For “Always on My Mind,” the recognition belongs to Nelson’s hit recording. That difference makes a better introduction than treating every song associated with him as something he originated and first recorded.
Why these songs are a starting point, not a ranking
No definitive source-backed ranking establishes which Willie Nelson songs are objectively “best.” These selections instead balance the significance of his writing with recognition of his own recordings. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum reports that Nelson had 20 number-one country hits and 114 chart singles between 1962 and 1993, a substantial catalogue that cannot be reduced to four tracks.

Nelson’s style also resists a single-lane introduction. The Hall of Fame describes his phrasing as unconventional against mainstream Nashville conventions of the 1960s, and the GRAMMY overview presents a career spanning a broad range of styles. The songs above offer a compact first listen, not a complete account of that range.

The Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize honoree page provides another route into Nelson’s legacy: it records the 2015 honor and places his work in a broader songwriting context. Taken together, the starter songs, a wider compilation and that institutional overview help distinguish Nelson’s work as a writer from his long and varied life as a performer.
