First identify which side of FFmpeg failed: its input source or its YouTube output. The documented reconnect* options are HTTP protocol controls for inputs; they do not automatically repair every YouTube ingest error or restart an FFmpeg process that has exited. Match the log to the failure, then check YouTube’s stream health and test a recovery plan before the next service.
1. Find out whether the input or output failed
FFmpeg can read media from a file, camera, network feed, or HTTP stream and send a separate output to YouTube. An input disconnect and a YouTube ingest failure are different problems, and an input retry flag will not fix a failed output connection.
- Save the complete FFmpeg log around the disconnect, including timestamps, and the exact command with credentials removed.
- Record
ffmpeg -versionand inspect the installed build’s HTTP options withffmpeg -h protocol=http. - Note the input URL scheme and the output URL scheme. Redact source credentials and never share the YouTube stream key.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, record the stream-health message and when it appeared.
Classify the event from the log: input open/read failure, output connect/write failure, normal end-of-file (EOF), or FFmpeg process exit. Compare its timestamp with YouTube’s status. The two records help distinguish a dropped source from an ingest, credential, encoding, or host problem.
2. Use reconnect options only for the failure they cover
FFmpeg documents the options below for the HTTP protocol. They do not supervise every output protocol, and they cannot relaunch a process that has terminated. Available options can vary by packaged FFmpeg build, so check the local help output before relying on them. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes the options and retry controls.

Current upstream FFmpeg source has reconnect and reconnect_streamed disabled by default and sets reconnect_delay_max to 120 seconds. These are version-sensitive upstream defaults, not guarantees for every installed build. The protocol documentation also describes controls for retry counts and total reconnect delay: keep retries bounded and appropriate to the source rather than retrying indefinitely.

For an HTTP input that is expected to remain live, an illustrative pattern is:

'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST.example/STREAM_PATH/STREAM_KEY'Replace the placeholders and keep the stream key private. Place HTTP input options before the -i they configure. The 30-second delay cap is an example, not a universally correct value or a guarantee of recovery. Confirm option availability in your installed build, and do not use -reconnect_at_eof blindly with finite media.
3. If the YouTube output failed, check ingest configuration
When FFmpeg reports an error opening or writing its output, investigate that output connection rather than adding HTTP input flags. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL and stream key for the correct scheduled or live event, then verify that the encoder uses those values and the intended protocol. YouTube explains the ingest configuration in its live encoder settings.

- Check the output URL for a typo, stale event destination, incorrect server, or wrong protocol. Keep the key out of logs and screenshots shared publicly.
- For an RTMPS SSL error, verify that the URL begins with
rtmpsand points to the correct server. If it does and the error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443. - Check relevant firewall and network rules, then compare the FFmpeg error and its timestamp with the Live Control Room’s stream-health message.
- Rotate the stream key only if it is compromised or otherwise needs replacement; update the encoder with the new key afterward.

4. Change encoding settings only when the evidence points to compatibility
Reconnect flags do not fix a dropped HTTP input by changing video bitrate. If YouTube’s stream health or the encoder log points to ingest compatibility, compare the stream with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations:

- Use RTMP or RTMPS as the ingest protocol.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommendations for those settings, not universal requirements; choose a bitrate the production’s connection can sustain.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio.
These are YouTube recommendations, not retry settings. Do not change codecs or bitrate as a substitute for identifying whether the source or output disconnected.

YouTube recommends preparing the encoder early, checking the preview and stream health, and testing with representative sound and motion. - Run a private or otherwise appropriate preflight stream early enough to diagnose problems before worship begins.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while checking the corresponding FFmpeg log.
- Test the recovery action you intend to use, including backup-encoder failover if your church has one. Confirm the public-facing stream resumes as expected.
- If the church keeps a local recording, verify it as a separate safeguard; a YouTube reconnect does not itself establish that a local recording was saved.
A retry may reopen one HTTP input, but uninterrupted operation also depends on output recovery, process and host survival, monitoring, and a tested backup plan. The cited YouTube guidance recommends preflight and failover testing; it does not prescribe a particular process supervisor or complete streaming architecture.
