If YouTube Studio says your stream’s video resolution is changing, first compare the encoder’s actual outgoing resolution and frame rate with its configured settings, then check the warning details and upload stability. There is no confirmed single cause or universal fix for this exact warning. Also distinguish it from a viewer seeing softer playback: YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple formats, so a change in player quality alone does not prove your encoder’s source resolution changed (YouTube Help).
First identify which resolution is changing
Warning in YouTube Studio
If the message appears in your live stream health panel, investigate the signal your encoder is sending and the specific health details shown there. YouTube’s Live Streaming API models the incoming stream’s resolution and frame rate separately and exposes health status and configuration issues (Google for Developers).
Quality changes only in the viewer’s player
A viewer may see playback quality change because YouTube creates multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. That does not, by itself, show that the encoder changed its incoming resolution. Check the Studio health panel and encoder output statistics before altering the source settings.
Diagnose the warning in a measured order
- Check the encoder’s live output. While streaming, note the actual outgoing resolution and frame rate. Compare them with the output settings you selected before going live. If the actual values change, investigate the encoder’s configuration or behavior rather than assuming YouTube’s player quality is the cause.
- Read the exact health details in YouTube Studio. YouTube provides stream-health status and configuration issues to help diagnose an incoming stream. Its API lists low video bitrate and frame-rate mismatch among possible issue types; either is a clue to check, not proof of what caused this particular warning.
- Check upload reliability before increasing quality. YouTube advises choosing a quality your internet connection can sustain and testing upload bitrate. Test under conditions similar to the real stream, including audio and movement, then observe health while live. If upload delivery is unstable, increasing the encoder’s bitrate can make the problem harder to sustain.
- Match bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate. Use the row for your actual output in the current YouTube recommendations below. Do not apply one bitrate target to every codec or resolution.
- Verify baseline encoder settings. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 support; confirm that the selected combination is supported by your encoder and streaming workflow.
- Change one factor, then observe. If health or output statistics indicate bitrate or connection trouble, reduce stream demand or address the connection and check again. If the encoder’s actual resolution changes despite stable delivery, investigate its configuration. Avoid changing resolution, frame rate and bitrate all at once, because that makes the result harder to interpret.
Use the bitrate row that matches your stream
The following values are YouTube Help recommendations displayed when accessed on October 4, 2026. Values are Mbps. For each codec group, the table separates the minimum from the recommended bitrate. Select the row matching the incoming resolution and frame rate; the H.264 figures are distinct from the AV1/H.265 figures.

Common symptoms and what to check
- Studio warns, but the player merely looks softer: check Studio’s health message and the encoder’s actual output. The player may be using a different YouTube-transcoded rendition.
- Actual resolution or frame rate differs from the encoder configuration: review the encoder’s output settings and its live statistics. YouTube’s API treats incoming resolution and frame rate as separate properties, so verify both.
- Health details indicate low video bitrate: compare the encoder’s bitrate with the matching codec, resolution and frame-rate recommendation, then assess whether your connection can reliably upload it.
- Health details indicate a frame-rate mismatch: compare the configured and actual outgoing frame rate. Do not treat the resolution warning alone as proof of a frame-rate issue.
- Connection seems unreliable: run an upload bitrate test and consider testing a wired connection as one way to assess reliability. YouTube recommends reliable upload and bitrate testing; it does not say a cable is required or that it will fix this warning.
- No clear cause appears: record the warning text, the encoder’s actual output values and the health details, then make one controlled change at a time. The available official documentation does not establish a definitive cause for this exact wording.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix for a source-resolution change. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay on. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
