Why McConaughey objected to the “anti-gun” label
In a July 30, 2023 interview on ABC’s This Week, McConaughey said, “I changed the word from ‘control’ to ‘responsibility.’” He explained: “Well, control sounds like a mandate and nobody wants a mandate. No one wants to be controlled.” The change was about how to frame a conversation with people who strongly identify with Second Amendment rights—not a declaration that he opposed every form of gun regulation. Read the ABC News transcript.
What policies he had supported
His earlier public remarks show why the label could seem plausible to some observers, but also why it is incomplete. Speaking at the White House on June 7, 2022, after the Robb Elementary School shooting in his hometown of Uvalde, McConaughey backed a package that included expanded background checks, raising the minimum purchase age for AR-15 rifles to 21, waiting periods and red-flag laws. The American Presidency Project transcript records his proposals; CBS News’ contemporaneous report places the appearance in the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting.
Those proposals are restrictions on access to firearms in specified circumstances. His preference for the phrase “gun responsibility” therefore did not erase the policies he had advocated; it described how he wanted people to discuss them.

His appeal to listen to gun owners
McConaughey’s argument in the ABC interview was that Democrats should engage gun owners on terms they recognize, rather than dismissing or talking down to them. “Quit patronizing,” he said, adding that many Americans had grown up with guns in their lives and, in his view, handled them responsibly. He presented listening as a way to make conversation possible across political and cultural divides. ABC News’ interview report also describes his appeal for consensus on policies intended to reduce gun violence.
That is his characterization of gun owners and his proposed approach to persuasion, not an independent finding about how all owners behave or proof that the wording persuades anyone.
