Singers wear in-ear monitors to hear a tailored mix of their voice and the music onstage. They may remove an earpiece to hear the room or audience more directly, or because the fit or mix is uncomfortable. But a single moment in a video cannot reveal a singer’s specific reason unless the performer or another reliable source explains it.
What singers hear through their earpieces
These earpieces are usually part of an in-ear monitoring (IEM) system, not ordinary wireless earbuds. The system sends a personalized audio mix—often the singer’s own voice plus selected instruments—to earphones worn onstage. Shure describes a typical wireless setup as a mixer feeding a transmitter, a bodypack receiver worn by the performer, and the earphones. A wired bodypack can also be used when the performer does not need to move freely. Shure’s introduction to in-ear monitoring explains the components.
The mix can be adjusted to suit the performer and the song. A singer might need a clear vocal signal, a particular instrument for pitch or timing, or a balance that helps them stay with the band. The earpieces are therefore a monitoring tool: they let performers hear key parts of a live performance without relying entirely on sound coming from loudspeakers across the stage.
Why use in-ear monitors instead of floor wedges?
Floor wedges—speakers placed onstage and aimed toward performers—can work well, but they add sound to the room and may make it harder to control what each performer hears. IEMs can provide a clearer personal mix, reduce stage-speaker spill and the risk of feedback, and allow a performer to move without leaving a wedge’s useful listening area. Shure also notes that clearer vocal monitoring can help reduce vocal strain. These are possible benefits, not guarantees: results depend on the setup, venue, mix and performer. Shure’s overview of personal monitor systems discusses the trade-offs.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why might a singer take an earpiece out?
A sealed, isolated mix can make the room sound distant. A singer may want to hear the audience directly, reconnect with the acoustics around them, or respond to an uncomfortable fit or a monitor mix that does not sound right. Removing an earpiece could also be a deliberate performance choice. Those are possible explanations, not proof of why a particular singer acted in a particular clip.
Ultimate Ears PRO’s transition guide for singers moving from wedges to in-ears describes ways to add controlled room presence to an IEM mix, including audience or ambience microphones, a little vocal reverb and stereo space. It also discusses adjusting the fit, equalization, reverb and balance rather than simply turning the monitors up. These options require a suitable setup and someone able to route and mix the sound.

Does taking one earpiece out affect hearing safety?
It can create a risky trade-off: the exposed ear is no longer protected by the sealed earpiece, while the performer may turn up the remaining monitor. Shure, drawing on Sensaphonics guidance, says removing one earpiece makes the one left in seem 6 dB quieter to the performer, which may encourage an increase in its level. The same article quotes Dr. Santucci calling one-ear use “a disaster” from a hearing-health perspective and recommends using both earpieces. Shure’s article with Sensaphonics guidance outlines that advice. Sennheiser likewise says using just one in-ear is not recommended because it can be too loud in that ear and obscure overall hearing. Sennheiser’s IEM guide provides its recommendation.
The Shure article also summarizes exposure figures attributed to NIOSH: “above 80 dB(A)” for a workday, exposure time cut in half for every additional 3 dB, and 15 minutes at 100 dB(A). The article does not identify the underlying NIOSH publication or its year, so these figures should be understood as Shure’s summary, not independently verified here as a current occupational standard. Individual hearing risk depends on sound level and exposure duration; performers with hearing-health questions should seek qualified professional guidance.

What can help a performer stay connected to the room?
If isolation is the problem, removing an earpiece is not the only option. Depending on the performer’s setup, possible adjustments include:
- Adding an audience or ambience microphone to the monitor mix.
- Using a small amount of vocal reverb or stereo space to make the mix feel less dry.
- Adjusting the earpiece fit and the mix’s equalization, balance or other settings.
- Keeping levels conservative and using a receiver limiter where the system supports one.
These approaches can bring some room sound into the monitor while retaining a mix in both ears. They are not universal fixes; the right choice depends on the equipment, venue, mix and performer.
