Those are different kinds of recognition, so this guide labels them rather than treating either as a universal verdict.
Two different answers to “best”
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide offers a critics-oriented ranking; the Academy Awards recognize a winner chosen from that year’s nominees. The Academy’s 96th ceremony took place on March 10, 2024, and honored films released in 2023. Its Animated Feature winner was The Boy and the Heron, with Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki named with the award.
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated September 27, 2024, placed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at #1 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem at #2. Both were listed at 95% on the Tomatometer in that guide. These are figures from the 2024 guide, not live scores rechecked here.

What makes Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse the critics’ pick?
Its #1 placement and 95% Tomatometer listing make it the clearest choice if you want the leader of Rotten Tomatoes’ guide. The site’s Critics Consensus describes it as: “Just as visually dazzling and action-packed as its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse thrills from start to cliffhanger conclusion.” That is Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus, not a quotation from an individual critic.

Why watch The Boy and the Heron?
Choose it if you want the film that won the Academy Award for Animated Feature among the 2023 releases honored at the 96th Oscars. Its award status is distinct from a critics’ list ranking: the Academy’s result identifies its winner, while Rotten Tomatoes’ guide identifies its own top-ranked film.

It is the #2 film in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide and shares the guide’s listed 95% Tomatometer figure with the #1 title. That makes it a strong alternative if you are choosing from that list, although the score alone does not establish what any particular viewer will enjoy.
